Texas makes a great winter getaway thanks to its mild winter weather and a wide variety of things to do. If you’re looking to venture off the beaten path from some of the larger cities such as Houston, here are 10 small towns that are worth a visit!
1. Marfa
Marfa is a small town with a vibrant, quirky feel. A couple of notable draws include a fake Prada storefront, as well as a phenomenon known as the Marfa Lights that people have attributed to everything from lightning to UFOs. It’s also located near Big Bend National Park, worth checking out for its gorgeous scenery and serene, remote feel.
2. Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is a unique Texas town with a German heritage and flair. Check out Vereins Kirche Museum, a replica of a 19th century German church, or enjoy wine tasting over at Cross Mountain Vineyards.
3. Round Top
If you enjoy antiquing, Round Top is the place for you. This charming small town is home to The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, the fair is running this year at the end of January, and is one of the largest of its kind in the country.
4. Conroe
Sitting on Lake Conroe, this is a great choice for those looking for a variety of things to do. There’s countless opportunities for outdoor exploration nearby, while the town itself is home to art galleries, local shops, and several breweries.
5. Johnson City
If you’re looking for a getaway that could also make a fun day trip from the San Antonio area, check out Johnson City. Located about an hour from San Antonio just off of US Highway 290, Johnson City lies in the Texas hill country. Check out some of the local wineries, such as Texas Hills Vineyard, as well as local shops.
