There are over 4 million unique cities and towns spread across the world.
So it’s incredible to think that when Lonely Planet chooses 10 best of the best, two of the best cities in the world to visit are right here in the United States.
You won’t have to go far to find world-beating attractions, unique atmospheres, and interesting things to see and do.
So which cities made the cut? These are the 2 cities considered the best in the U.S. by Lonely Planet:
Exploring Philadelphia
According to Lonely Planet, Philadelphia is the fifth best city to visit.
It was chosen for its rich history and electric energy.
Philadelphia was the first World Heritage city in America, and it is recognized as the birthplace of the United States as we know it.
For this reason, it is considered a destination every American, or history nerd, should visit at least once in their lifetime.
Some of Philadelphia’s main attractions include the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, but there are plenty of other things to see and do if you’re looking to inject some fun in your visit.
Why not take the Dark Philly adult night tour? Especially good fun at this time of year, this is a spooky tour where a local university professor will share stories and myths about the cities as you walk, from ghost pirate ships to vampire attacks.
It’s fascinating and terrifying at the same time. Prices start at $35.
Philadelphia is known for its food just as much as its heritage. Make sure you visit the Italian Market where you’ll find some of the best Italian antipasti in the U.S. as well as an abundance of famous Philly cheesesteak options.
From here head to the Reading Terminal Market for dessert. Two of the most highly rated stores here are Bassetts who sell rich and creamy ice cream and the Dutch Eating Place who are famous for their apple dumplings.
Exploring Kansas City
Rounding out the list in 10th place for the best city to visit this year is Kansas City.
This is a surprise entry, as Kansas City has exploded on the scene as a travel destination thanks to the so-called ‘Taylor Swift Effect.’
But there are so many other reasons to visit Kansa City than the chance for Swifties to spot her boyfriend!
This year the city’s airport has opened a new (very swanky) terminal and the streetcar line through the heart of the city has been extended. This is free to ride, making it an appealing choice for budget travelers.
Kansas City is nicknamed ‘The Heart of America’ and it is home to a huge number of parks and green spaces, meaning it is a city that feels at one with nature. There are more than 200 fountains in the city, which are also considered a unique attraction of Kansas City.
One of the best free attractions in the city is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which contains over 40,000 works of fine arts including an incredible Asian art collection.
And if you’re traveling with kids (or if you’re just a big kid at heart) then the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium has a great reputation and is considered the top tourist attraction in the city. Tickets cost $22 per adult.
Want to get off the beaten path and try something a little different? Head to the rooftop of the Kansas City Public Library.
The views from this roof terrace are awesome, especially at night.
In the evenings, different events (ranging from yoga to film screenings) take place here. Admission is free.
