Getting a great deal on travel is one of the best feelings there is – because if there’s one thing better than seeing the world, it’s doing so without costing you a fortune.
Most of us know plenty of tricks and tips to help us save money on travel, but one of the best ways is to seek out destinations where it’s cheap to stay.
To help with that, Airbnb just released a new report that revealed some of the most booked destinations from 2023 that have average prices of $100 per night or less.
Many of these destinations offer the opportunity to experience the culture of popular countries but in more off-path cities with fewer crowds, leaving you with plenty of money left over to book the next one.
Let’s take a look:
Porto Alegre, Brazil
Situated in the southeast corner of Brazil, this amazing city lies at the mouth of the Guaiba River in a large natural bay that eventually becomes the Lagoa dos Patos.
This is a calmer and greener city than many of Brazil’s typical urban centers, featuring an almost 100-acre park right at its heart in the shape of Parque Farroupilha.
The historical old town features Portuguese colonial architecture, bustling markets with delicious and authentic food, and a host of top-notch museums covering art, history, and culture.
While there are currently no non-stop flights here from the United States, you can fly there cheaply from cities such as Miami with just one stop in Sao Paulo.
Dijon, France
Paris is great, but if you want to see the real France (and save a heap of money in the process), you could do worse than visiting Dijon.
This historic city is the capital of France’s famous Burgundy region, and as such, you can expect to find excellent wine and wonderful cuisine to go with it – the city is famous for the mustard to which it gave its name.
A great place to sample the excellent food and drink of this region is at Les Halles covered market, where local traders meet four days a week to sell their produce.
Monterrey, Mexico
If you love Mexico but you’re tired of the usual haunts, then a trip to Monterrey in the state of Nuevo Leon could be what you need.
The city has a fun atmosphere and young vibe thanks to its university and also includes many of the hallmarks you’d expect from a Mexican city, including a pretty old town, plenty of museums, and many famous old buildings.
It’s also a great place to base yourself if you love the outdoors, with the hiking paradise of Park Chipinque less than a one-hour drive away.
You can also fly to Monterrey non-stop from U.S. cities including Denver.
Malacca, Malaysia
This stylish fort city on Malaysia’s southwest coast is somewhat of a hidden gem in the country.
You can get an authentic Southeast Asian experience by wandering through its vibrant night market on Jonker Street, while elsewhere around the city, you will find an eclectic mix of Asian (Melaka Sultanate Palace) and colonial-style (St Paul’s Church) architecture.
Malacca is just a two-and-a-half-hour bus journey south of the capital Kuala Lumpur, a trip which will usually cost you less than $5.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Greece was one of Europe’s top destinations in 2023, but because of that, many of the mainstream destinations like Athens and Rhodes suffered from overcrowding.
To avoid that, consider the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, located on the Aegean coast.
This walkable city is just as pretty as anywhere else in Greece, with the added benefit of affording views of Mount Olympus from its sunny bay.
Great for foodies, this chilled city is heavily influenced by ancient cultures such as the Romans and the Ottomans.
Agadir, Morocco
Featuring quiet and stunning beaches, a range of different types of resorts, and proximity to the desert to enjoy unique experiences such as riding camels or driving beach buggies, Agadir is not your typical African destination.
Venture south from here and you will encounter some of Morocco’s unique coastline where rugged red rock formations reach out into the sea forming arches.
Winnipeg, Canada
The final affordable destination on this list is one of the closest to home – Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada has plenty to offer the curious traveler.
As well as cheap flights and cheap Airbnb prices, seeing the sights in Winnipeg is also cheap, thanks to the city’s Attraction Pass.
This pass enables you to visit the Manitoba Museum, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint, and FortWhyte Alive for just $27.
