Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and has some of the most exciting things to do in the whole country on its door step.
So, let’s take a look at what’s hot in this fantastic city.
Here are some of the top places to visit in Auckland
Take the Ferry to Waiheke Island
This stunning island is only a short trip from Auckland City or also from Devonport and is the perfect place to go on an overnight trip or for longer if you like. The area is rich in art, restaurants, cafes and trails and is a more than worthwhile visit – there’s loads to do on the island. It’s one of the most popular Auckland attractions for a reason.
Devonport
The area of Devonport is a short ferry ride or a drive over to the North Shore. The area’s North Head Historical Reserve is fantastic and has some fantastic views of Auckland Harbour. It’s also got amazing fish and chips – so be sure to try them out.
The Wynyard Quarter
Catch the views of Westhaven and take a relaxing trip along the Wharf area to Karanga Plaza and chill out and people watch. There are also a number of fantastic restaurants and bars in the area beside the North Wharf. Silo Park is also a great place for watching a film or enjoying the night market.
All Blacks
There’s nothing like watching the Kiwis playing in Eden Park and the walk from the city can be done in around an hour. After their Rugby World Cup win a few years ago (and an unbeaten 2013), it’s certainly worth seeing what could be the greatest team in any sport ever. For all of the sports fans out there, it’s definitely one of the things to do in Auckland that can get you in the team spirit.
Waitakere Ranges
Not so far from Auckland to the west are the Waitakere Ranges and their black sand surf beaches – these include Whatipu, Karekare, Piha and Te Henga/Bethells. The area is a fantastic one and has some of the most beautiful landscape in the region. You could even camp there.
Sky Tower
The Sky Tower is right in the centre of the city and taking the glass lift to the top is a delight. It provides fantastic all round views of the city and further afield and there’s even a restaurant if you want to dine out. It’s also possible to bungee jump from it too, though not ideal if you’ve been eating in the restaurant.
Enjoy a Drink
You’ll want a drink to finish off your time here and look back. The best place to do so is Tyler Street Garage at the Britomart. The rooftop bar has fantastic views of the Auckland Waterfront with plenty of great bar snacks and cocktails to choose from.
Take a Wine Tour
New Zealand is fortunate that it can host some fantastic vineyards so close to a major area. Auckland has plenty for wine lovers to enjoy and a trip to one of the New World vineyards is a must. Check out this wine tour.
