The East Coast is a dynamic, beautiful part of the United States that offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a sunny, warm-weather getaway or a winter wonderland retreat, there’s something there for you. Here are 7 off the beaten path places to visit along the east coast this winter.
1. Helen, Georgia
The small town in Georgia features a German theme. Yes, you read that right. Helen features bavarian-style buildings and shops. Drop by the Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen, for example, to enjoy some delicious sweet treats.
2. Naples, Florida
This charming, luxurious-feeling small town in Florida definitely isn’t as well known as cities such as Orlando or Miami. However, it offers practically all of the best parts, including gorgeous beaches, golf courses, and a wide variety of shops and eateries, as well as a slightly slower, less busy pace.
3. Lake George, New York
This town, located in upstate New York, is a great spot to visit for those looking for a winter wonderland destination. Lake George is home to countless opportunities for winter sports, such as skiing and snow tubing.
You’ll also want to check out some of the city’s “ice bars”. Part bar, part Work of art, these unique winter attractions feature sculptures, and sometimes even the bars themselves, that are carved from ice. An exact schedule for the winter 2022 to 2023 ice bars hasn’t been released yet, but likely will soon.
4. Howe Caverns (New York)
New York City is most likely the first place that comes to mind when you think of the state of New York. The Big Apple isn’t all this East Coast state has to offer, however. Howe Caverns is a series of expansive limestone caves.
A tour of the caves includes not just a journey through the winding trails but also a boat ride on an underground river. The caverns are located in upstate New York and can make a great day trip from New York City.
5. Stowe, Vermont
Venture out to this cozy town nestled in the Vermont countryside to enjoy Some great opportunities for downhill skiing. After a day out on the slopes, head back into town to warm up with some hot chocolate or a delicious meal from one of the town’s local restaurants, then check out some of the many shops.
6. Manatee Springs State Park (Florida)
A visit to this state park in Florida is a great way to view, you guessed it, Manatees. These majestic creatures flock to the warm spring waters in the winter. The park is also a great spot for other activities, such as viewing other varieties of wildlife, as well as nature walks.
7. Florida Keys
The Florida Keys is a great destination to escape the cold of winter without the need for a passport or an international flight. Travelers can either fly into Miami International Airport and rent a car to begin a journey down to the keys or fly into Key West International Airport to begin their journey on the final key. Be sure to visit the southernmost point in the continental U.S. for a great photo op!
