Mexico continues to be the most popular overseas destination country for American tourists.
In 2023 alone 19 million foreign tourists travelled to Mexico and those travelers mainly arrived from the United States, Canada, and Colombia.
This is 12.7% more than in 2019 with tourists attracted to the year-round heat and sunshine that Mexico offers.
But where are those tourists choosing to go?
These are the 3 most popular destinations in Mexico for 2024 according to new figures:
Los Cabos
2 million 74 thousand international tourists arrived at Los Cabos airport between January and November 2023. That makes it the third most popular municipality in Mexico.
Los Cabos is located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and it is a much smaller resort area than Cancun but with a bigger reputation for luxury.
One of the things that make Los Cabos stand out is its unique landscapes which are an unusual mix of deserts that go on for miles, beautiful golden sand beaches, and dramatic rock outcroppings.
Standing on the beach and looking at the mountain peaks in the Sierra de la Laguna is an awe-inspiring experience.
Aside from its beautiful scenery, Los Cabos is also home to an incredible purpose-built resort area and it is regularly listed as one of the most beautiful resort destinations in the world.
Los Cabos is famous for its flashy lifestyle and celebrity sightings but visiting doesn’t have to be decadent or expensive. Those hoping to experience Los Cabos on a budget can avoid its high-end bars and clubs and experience traditional Mexican culture and customs instead.
Although Los Cabos doesn’t boast the same cultural and archeological attractions as other Mexican destinations the people of Los Cabos are one of its highlights.
Cancun
The most popular destination in Mexico by a significant margin is Cancun. 8,992,000 international tourists arrived at Cancun airport between January and November 2023.
Cancun is one of Mexico’s most popular resort areas because it offers a unique blend of both breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
The thing you’ll immediately notice about Cancun is its incredible turquoise-colored waters, powdery white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs that attract snorkelers, scuba divers, and other watersport enthusiasts.
But away from the shoreline, Cancun has much more to offer than just this. This is because the Yucatan Peninsula was a very important center for trade and culture during the Mayan period and many significant archeological remnants from this period remain.
Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo in southeast Mexico, in the Yucatan peninsula. The walled port city of Tulum is a particular highlight for those keen to explore the culture of the area.
It would be impossible to talk about the attractions of Cancun without mentioning the city’s cuisine. From street food to fine dining, Cancun is renowned for being home to some of the most exceptional chefs in the world.
Because Cancun is such an international city, you can enjoy traditional Mexican dishes alongside cutting-edge fusion cuisine and incredible world food.
Mexico City
Finally, 3,860,000 tourists arrived in Mexico City in the first 11 months of 2023.
If you really want to immerse yourself in Mexican culture and history then there is no better place to be.
Mexico City was the capital of the Aztec empire, and it is home to a number of important cultural and historical sites.
Highlights not to be missed include the ruins of Teotihuacan, the National Museum of Anthropology, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Mexico City is certainly an incredible city to explore if you’re interested in culture and architecture, but it is also a great place to let your hair down.
This is a great place to party alongside local residents for an authentic Mexican fiesta and is a popular and welcoming spot for solo travelers.
It is also worth noting that Mexico City generally offers a cheaper vacation option than Los Cabos or Cancun and has a relaxed, laid-back feel that is incredibly appealing.
