Knowing where other travelers are heading in 2024 is a great source of inspiration for your own trips this year.
The travel app Visited has surveyed the global travelers using their site and found that American travelers have, on average, visited 16 countries.
The highest number of American users have traveled to Mexico, Canada, France, the UK, and Italy.
They asked those same travelers which destinations were on their 2024 bucket list.
These are the 3 most sought-after destinations for U.S. travelers according to this new report:
Australia
There’s no place quite like Australia. With 2,800 annual hours of sunshine and incredible natural beauty, this is a bucket list destination for outdoor adventure lovers and nature enthusiasts.
Though Australia is an incredibly safe country, many travelers to the destination joke that everything in Australia is trying to kill you.
This is because from spiders to sharks, snakes to stingers, to crocodiles, Australia is home to a fascinating array of deadly animals.
It is also home to native animals such as koalas and kangaroos, and wildlife enthusiasts will travel to Australia to see these incredible creatures in their native habitat.
Other excellent reasons to visit Australia include the chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The beaches and waters of Australia are truly spectacular and unlike any you can find elsewhere.
Australia has a 37,000 km-long coastline and over 11,000 beaches, so you really will be spoiled for choice.
Culture vultures will also enjoy marveling at Australia’s Sydney Opera House and the Sydney cityscape is a site to behold. Australia is home to a wide array of unique cities and Melbourne’s thriving arts and culture scene is a particular draw.
Greece
The jewel in the crown of the Mediterranean, Greece is a culturally fascinating destination that also boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Over a million American travelers visited Greece in 2023.
Greece is home to 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites which is among the most in Europe.
The country’s ancient ruins are a huge attraction for visitors with the Parthenon temple, the Archeological Site of Olympia, and the island of Delos being particular highlights.
The beaches of Greece are also a huge attraction. Try island hopping to experience as many as possible and don’t shy away from the smaller, less popular islands such as Amorgos or Kythira. The beaches here are just as beautiful as on the big-name islands like Mykonos and Santorini but with smaller price tags.
Greece is a particularly popular destination for European travelers, so its beaches and its archeological ruins can be uncomfortably crowded during the summer months. Try traveling in the shoulder seasons of Spring or Fall for fewer crowds, a more comfortable climate, and an all-around more relaxing travel experience.
Greece is such a fascinating and diverse country that it would be impossible to see it all in one trip. From the beaches, the rich history, exploring off-the-beaten-track wildlife, or partying until dawn, there really is something for everyone.
New Zealand
It makes sense that both Australia and New Zealand would be on the list of most sought-after destinations for U.S. travelers. As well as their outstanding natural beauty, the shared language means that these are incredibly easy destinations to visit.
The people of New Zealand are friendly and welcoming, and some of the biggest attractions of the country include its indigenous Maori culture and picturesque landscapes.
New Zealand is a relatively small island nation, but it has a big personality.
It is considered the world’s adventure capital, and as the birthplace of bungee jumping, it attracts huge numbers of thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies.
If you don’t want to jump off a bridge, then don’t worry. There are plenty of more sedate activities to enjoy in New Zealand too.
Experience incredible views of stunning fjords, take a helicopter ride or simple hike to the top of Franz Josef or Fox Glacier, or enjoy some of the world’s finest wines. The vineyards of New Zealand are well worth exploring.
