Isla Mujeres
While Isla Mujeres boasts the highest hotel occupancy rates in absolute terms (92%), the fact that there are only 8,500 rooms on the island puts this gorgeous Mexican Caribbean gem at no. 2 on today’s list.
Located just a short ferry ride away from Cancun (think 20-30 minutes), Isla Mujeres serves as the quieter, more laid-back counterpart of its wildly popular neighbor.
Here, you’ll find many of what are considered to be the most beautiful beaches in the region, including Playa Norte, Playa Lancheros, Playa Sol, and Playa Paraiso, just to name a few – all of these are perfect not only for swimming and sunbathing but also for snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, and more.
Visitors who are more interested in exploring the Mexican Caribbean’s rich cultural heritage instead won’t be disappointed, either.
The island’s streets, adorned with colorful murals and gorgeous little mon-and-pop shops, create the most charming and authentic backdrop for year-long exploration, while the eateries that range from humble street carts to higher-end restaurants are truly next level.
Puerto Morelos
The top 3 list is finished off by none other than Puerto Morelos, a charming coastal town that has finally come out of the shadows of its better-known neighbors and turned into one of the trendiest destinations in the country.
In fact, this spring, the area is expecting hotel room occupancy rates to shoot up to 90%, and considering that this seemingly small port town is home to more than 6,000 rooms, that’s a pretty impressive feat.
I do want to note, though, that even those seeking to experience Mexican culture in its calmest, most authentic form will have a great time in Puerto Morelos despite it being so popular this season – the decades-old efforts to preserve the region’s natural beauty and culture have really paid off.
Here, you can explore the famous Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (the second-largest in the world), walk through the cobblestone streets of the town’s central square, go hunting for hidden treasures in the local markets, and, of course, soak in the sun in one of the many pristine beaches that dot the coastline.
