Some of the best places on Earth take patience, determination, and commitment to reach, while other household names have seemingly endless flights to choose from.

We all know Europe is one of the best regions of the world for adventure, which is why backpacking is so common.

With train travel very popular in Europe as well, there are so many cool places to check out the low and slow way.

Flying is obviously the most common way to travel throughout Europe, but even in 2024 there are some popular destinations that still don’t have an airport.

For one stunning coastal region of Europe that brings in over 5 million tourists, that will soon change.

New Airport Opening In The Stunning Amalfi Coast

Travelers can argue all day long about which European destination is the best, but surely we can all agree one of the most stunning coastlines is none other than Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Since it’s an election year, we can save the arguments for loud-mouthed pundits and presidential candidates.

All the more reason to make use of your passport this year and venture off for a blissful international vacation.

Nonetheless, the Amalfi Coast should be high on your wishlist or at the very least on your radar in 2024.

Those in the know understand how one of Italy’s most scenic destinations is more challenging to reach since the closure of the airport for commercial use.

But, like the idea of ‘revenge travel’, the people have spoken and the revamped airport will reopen on an unofficial date in summer 2024.

Which Airlines Will Serve The Amalfi Coast?

The Salerno – Costa d’Amalfi Airport will no longer be used primarily for military purposes and will be open to the public.

Although not official, the expectation is to cut the blue ribbon in July, with Spanish airline Volotea anchoring the airport for the time being.

The airport is based in the small town of Belizzi, but it is much easier to access than usual for the stunning coastal towns in southern Italy.

Formerly, travelers would have to fly into Naples, which may still be the best option for some Americans with the new direct flight by Delta Air Lines.

That is until the new airport picks up speed and offers more flights. So far, the runway has been extended, but more upgrades are in the works.

Right now, the only official flights in July will connect travelers to Italy’s Sardinia and France’s Nantes.

September will see another pair of Italian cities – Verona and Catania. Time will tell who else joins the party.

What Makes The Amalfi Coast A Must-Visit Destination?

Italy has been breaking tourism records as it is one of the most iconic and bucket-list-worthy destinations in Europe.

The Amalfi Coast has surely contributed to these staggering numbers, as some might think it would, but given its challenging logistics, many tourists opt for other destinations, like the always enchanting city of Rome.

While some tourists choose to live the high life in Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast is about as postcard-worthy as it gets.

The side of the country exudes charm with historic seaside villages (some UNESCO-protected), incredible beaches along azure waters, and of course, it’s not a trip to Italy without world-class dining.

The good and bad part about visiting the Amalfi Coast is that its beauty never seems to end.

On one hand, there are ample places to see and plenty of things to do, but it’s tough to check off all the boxes for this low-key, slower-paced region.

Many visitors go to the properly named towns of Amalfi, Positano, or Sorrento; others have found hidden gems with a local feel in the tiny town of Atrani for less crowds and Cetara, a place foodies will never forget.

Exploring southern Italy’s otherworldly coastline is certainly worth the adventure before the new airport opens. But flying in, hopping a train, and then a bus isn’t for everyone.

Once the new airport opens in summer, this is the nudge you need to scratch your travel itch on the beautiful Amalfi Coast this year.
