According to recent data from AirHelp, these are the 10 U.S. airports with the most delays based on data from travel this spring
You might notice a trend here because all of the top five worst airports are located in the same state: Florida. So if you’re traveling to or from the Sunshine State, this is something important to keep in mind!

1. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
The worst airport in the U.S. for delays and disruptions is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, with a whopping 35.80% of flights disrupted during the period analyzed.
With over one-third of all flights impacted, you run the risk of delays or cancellations if you’re flying in or out of this popular Florida airport.
2. Miami International Airport
Another airport that’s particularly bad for delays is Miami International Airport.
It’s no surprise since Miami has been breaking all-time tourism records and drawing a record-breaking number of visitors thanks to its amazing beaches, art and culture, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife.
Unfortunately, 33.19% of flights are delayed or disrupted, which can put a major damper on travel plans for the millions of visitors flocking to Miami every year.
3. Orlando International Airport
Sunny Orlando is frequently among the most popular destinations in the United States with more than 74 million visitors in 2023!
The biggest reason people visit Orlando is for its theme parks, with Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando attracting millions of guests each year.
Unfortunately, Orlando’s airport is not very reliable, with 32.03% of flights disrupted.
4. Tampa International Airport
Another Florida airport with a large number of delays and disruptions is Tampa International Airport.
Among the top tourist destinations in the U.S. this year, Tampa has been growing in popularity.
However, its airport hasn’t been able to keep up, with 31.60% of flights disrupted.
5. Southwest Florida International Airport
Rounding out the top five worst airports in the United States is Southwest Florida International Airport, which is located in Fort Myers.
This airport had a large number of flights disrupted as well — 31.05% during the period analyzed.

The airports above are the worst when it comes to delays, but beyond the top five, here are the rest of the U.S. airports notorious for having delayed flights.

- Harry Reid International Airport: 29.69% of flights disrupted

Avoiding Flight Delays
While there’s no guaranteed way to avoid flight delays, one of the easiest things you can do is book early morning flights. Why? According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 86% of flights departing between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. are on time.
Meanwhile, only 66% of flights departing between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. are on time. This is a huge difference and makes flying in the morning worth it to avoid delays!
Additionally, you can avoid connecting flights in airports that are known for high delays. It’s worth flying direct (even if it costs a little more) if you want to be on time, rather than having a layover at one of the airports listed above.
