If you’re dreaming of spending lazy days relaxing in the Caribbean (and let’s face it, who isn’t dreaming of lounging on Caribbean beaches) then there’s a new best place to be.
Although relatively small in size, the Dominican Republic is big when it comes to tourism.
In fact, according to a new report from Dominican Today, the Dominican Republic has surpassed other Latin American giants, including Brazil and Argentina, in visitor numbers this year.
The Dominican Republic is now considered a global leader in the post-pandemic tourism arena, welcoming more than 10 million visitors last year (not bad for a country with a population of just 11 million).
And although Brazil is the largest country in the region in terms of size, the Dominican Republic has attracted 60% more visitors than Brazil.
So why is the Dominican Republic soaking up the spotlight?
The Best Beaches In The Caribbean?
When you visit the Dominican Republic you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the island is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea on the south meaning you can swim in both oceans on one trip.
And it is their beaches that the Dominican Republic is best known for.
As a certified beach bum, the quality of the beaches is the first thing I look for before I visit any new destination, and the Dominican Republic definitely doesn’t disappoint.
There’s something for everyone.
Cabarete’s beaches are popular for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and surfing, making it one of the most famous watersports destinations in Latin America.
Punta Cana’s world-renowned 48-kilometer (30-mile) stretch of sand is the most popular with tourists and perfect for relaxing.
You’ll find the clearest waters in the Dominican Republic at Bahía de las Águilas which is perfect for snorkelers. The best way to get here is by taking a boat from Cabo Rojo.
High-End And Luxurious Resorts
The main reason so many American travelers are flocking to the Dominican Republic?
Because it is home to some of the best all-inclusive resorts in the world.
And if you’re looking for a vacation that is low on effort but high on fun and relaxation, then there’s nothing better than an all-inclusive break.
The Dominican Republic is loved by families, friends and couples because of the quality of the all-inclusive resorts available, and it doesn’t have to break the bank either.

A Safe Destination For American Travelers
While other popular Caribbean destinations have experienced political instability, increased crime rates, or other safety concerns that have raised their advisory level with the U.S. Department of State, the Dominican Republic is considered a relatively safe place to visit.
The Dominican Republic has a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution rating. American travelers are advised to exercise increased caution due to crime.
These include avoiding obvious displays of wealth, following the advice of your resort or tour operator, being aware of your surroundings, and not physically resisting robbery if it is attempted.
For context, previous Caribbean hot spots for American travelers, such as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago currently have Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory ratings.
And a Level 2 rating is the same as destinations such as Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean, or Spain and the UK in Europe.
