It’s time to start making your Fall travel plans. And leaf peeping is a quintessential Fall activity for American travelers.

Luckily it’s also an activity that doesn’t have to break the bank!

Vermont is widely considered to be the best place for leaf peeping in the U.S. And now Amtrak is offering a fall foliage train ride from Washington to Vermont for just $62.

Riding On The Vermonter Amtrak Train

The Amtrak Vermonter is one of the most famous train routes in the U.S., especially in the Fall season.

It covers a distance of 611 miles through incredibly scenic countryside, and you won’t even have to leave your train seat to see the green hills, picturesque villages, and most importantly the multicolored fall leaves that characterize Vermont at this time of year.

This train departs from Washington, D.C., and runs north into New York City.

From here, it passes through Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire before arriving in Vermont.

The departure list reads like a ‘who’s who’ of great American leaf-peeping destinations—and all from the comfort of your own chair!

It’s worth mentioning if you’ve never been on an Amtrak train before, that the seats are incredibly comfortable.

You don’t have to upgrade to business class to get your own plush recliner.

In the Coach Class (aka the cheapest) category, you’ll find wide reclining seats and plenty of space to stretch your legs out.

Unlike flying coach, there is no awful middle seat option, as the chairs are in groups of 2: aisle or window.

I recommend opting for a window seat so that you can take advantage of the iconic views you’ll see as part of your journey.

I’m not a leaf-peeping expert, so I looked to the Vermont Tourism Board to find out the best time to visit Vermont for the fall season.

Although the peak foliage colors vary from year to year, the height of the season tends to be during the last week of September and the first week of October.

Prices From $62

I looked to an October date to find accurate prices, as that tends to be one of the best times to catch the Fall foliage.

To travel the whole route of The Vermonter train from Washington DC to St Albans in Vermont would cost just $62 for a return journey.

This price is based on travelling from Friday October 25 to Sunday October 27 for a long weekend trip.

The total journey time for this route is 12 hours 40 minutes, meaning the price per hour on the train is outrageously low!

Amtrak Fall Travel Flash Sale

You’ll need to act fast to take advantage of these prices.

Ticket prices are surprisingly cheap because Amtrak has launched a Fall Travel Flash Sale with at least 30% off flex fare prices.

This offer applies to all trips taken between August 14 and October 31 (so ideal for fall trips like the one outlined above) BUT only if you book before August 7.

You don’t need a promo code to take advantage of this offer, and there are no blackout dates.

You just need to think fast and book before the end of the week!

Fall Foliage In St Albans, Vermont

The final destination of the Amtrak Vermonter train is St Albans.

Luckily, this city is home to some iconic leaf-peeping destinations, and you’ll see plenty of Fall foliage here.

Aldis Hill Park at Hard’ack in Saint Albans is considered the best foliage viewing spot in the area.

This 1.6-mile loop trail takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and is suitable for walkers of all abilities.

If you prefer your foliage without actually leaving the city, then look to Taylor Park in St. Albans, which is right in the thick of things.

You can snap some photos of the famous changing leaves and then enjoy the city’s dining options.

St Albans is famous for the high quality of its foodie scene.
