Breathtaking beaches, spectacular waterfalls, and even an underwater sculpture park that attracts both divers and snorkelers.

Grenada might not be the most well-known Caribbean island but it is a beautiful gem that is only growing in popularity.

And it’s easy to see why!

So far this year visitor numbers to Grenada are 20% higher than they were in 2019 and 18% higher than last year.

Although it was hit by Hurricane Beryl earlier this summer, Grenada has recovered incredibly quickly and remained open for visitors.

Here’s what you need to know about this paradise island:

Why Choose Grenada?

Grenada is the very definition of an island paradise.

Not only does it boast sugar sand beaches fringed with palm trees, but you’re also never far away from lush rainforest, vibrant botanical gardens, and spectacular waterfalls.

The Annandale waterfalls are the most popular of these.  Island routes offer a trip to the waterfalls, along with a fascinating spice tour.

This costs $118 per person.

Grenada has the nickname ‘The Spice Island’ thanks to the abundance of incredible smelling spices that grow here, so this is a great way embrace this aspect of the island’s culture too.

One of Grenada’s most unique attractions is the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park. This man-made reef attracts scuba divers and snorkelers from around the world.

The sculptures were created by renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor, and the site is now listed as one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World.

Dive Grenada offers a snorkeling tour of the underwater sculpture park, with a 2-hour one-site dive costing $65 per person.

Grenada is an incredibly safe island.

And despite its abundance of high-octane activities, the pace of life in Grenada is relatively slow, and the island has a sleepy, laid-back vibe.

This means that if you enjoy nothing more than relaxing on the beach and drinking rum cocktails on your sun lounger, Grenada has plenty to offer you, too.

Affordable Flights To Grenada

The vast majority of visitors to Grenada are from the United States.

If you’re prepared to take a connecting flight then you can get to Grenada from almost anywhere in the U.S. But there are 3 cities that boast direct and affordable flights straight to the island.

They are:

New York – The cheapest direct flights from New York JFK to St George’s in Grenada in the fall are from November 16 to November 20, and if you fly with JetBlue then your return economy ticket will cost just $291.

The flight time for this flight is just under 5 hours for the outbound flight and just over 5 hours for the inbound flight.

Miami – Direct flights from Miami to St George’s are operated by American Airlines. A non stop economy return flight from November 6 to November 10 will set you back $667.

This route has the shortest flight time of the 3 options I’ll list here. Your outbound flight will take 3 hours 40 and your inbound flight will take 3 hours 55.

Boston Direct flights from Boston to Grenada only fly on Saturdays, so this is a great choice if you want to take a week-long trip. This flight is also operated by JetBlue and is also a wonderfully affordable option.

From November 9 to November 16, you can fly nonstop between the 2 cities for $335. This route has a flight time of 4 hours 38 outbound and 5 hours 12 minutes inbound.

Where To Stay In Grenada

The vast majority of the hotels and resorts on the island are located close to St George’s, which is also where the island’s airport is located.

This minimizes your transfer time to your hotel (making your trip as easy and straightforward as possible), but this southwest corner of the island is also where you’ll find many of its prettiest beaches.

Look to the horseshoe-shaped Carenage Harbour if you want to be in a scenic location surrounded by bars and restaurants.

For an affordable and family friendly option, the Blue Horizons Garden Resort in St George’s is a great choice. This is a charming hotel with an enormous pool.

A superior studio with garden views for 2 nights, based on 2 people sharing, will cost $315 per night.

If you’re looking for something a little more extravagant, then the Spice Island Beach Resort is one of the most luxurious hotels on the island. With private pools and fine cuisine, this is the ultimate luxury beach resort.

This comes at a much higher price tag though: $800 per night for 2 people sharing.

Editors Note: I actually moved my family to Grenada twice and absolutely loved it! My top recommendations would be:

  • When flying in, sit in the very front or back of the plane, you will be the first to exit and get through customs faster.
  • Check out West Indies Beer Co., especially on $2 Tuesdays. That’s 2 Eastern Caribbean dollars! This means beers are actually about 75 cents in USD.
  • Check out other resorts! You can grab dinner at most resorts without staying there, and they are all gorgeous.
  • GO TO SPICE AFFAIR! Seriously, if you like Indian food, this is the place. I would travel back just for this.
