An abundance of history, colorful graffiti-covered streets, a legendary nightlife scene, and fascinating seasonal events… it’s no wonder that Kayak has named Berlin the best international city in the world for solo travelers.

Berlin has so much to offer, and it really doesn’t matter whether you want to explore the city as part of a group or go it alone.

You’ll receive a warm welcome either way, and Berlin is a great place to meet new people.

Here’s why solo travelers should consider this fascinating destination for their next European getaway:

Berlin’s Main Tourist Attractions

Berlin is a city with a long, fascinating, and often difficult history.

And the museums and buildings here don’t shy away from sharing that history, believing that education is essential to ensure that atrocities aren’t forgotten and can’t happen again.

Museum in Berlin

The Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, The Holocaust Memorial, Berlin Stasi Prison, Checkpoint Charlie and the Reichstag are considered the most popular tourist attractions in the city.

I’ve visited Berlin several times, and the attraction that stays with me, and that I recommend everyone visit, is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

This is the center of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

It is made up of the Field of Stelae, which covers an area of 9,000 sqm and contains 2,711 concrete blocks, as well as an information center that shares information about Holocaust victims and their families and honors their memory. (pictured above)

It is difficult but so important, and it really brings to life the atrocity that most of us have only read about in history books.

Entrance is free of charge.

Close to Berlin’s museum district, I also recommend exploring the ornate and elaborate Berlin cathedral. (Known locally as Berliner Dom). This is a neo-Renaissance building and German protestant church topped with a 100 meter high dome.

Entrance costs 10 euros ($11) per person.

An Epic Nightlife Scene

Berlin is well known for its epic and iconic nightlife scene.

Berlin loves techno and if you do too then there’s no better place to be to experience this electrifying music.

Head to Berghain and Watergate to find the best techno clubs in the world.

But what makes the nightlife scene in the city so noteworthy for solo travelers is that it’s not uncommon for people to go clubbing alone in Berlin. This doesn’t just apply to tourists either but to local residents too.

In fact, heading to your favorite club or bar alone in the city is encouraged! It’s a great way to meet new faces and enjoy your favorite music without any pressure.

The same rules apply when clubbing in Berlin as they do when you’re partying solo anywhere else. Please don’t drink too much, and remain aware of your surroundings.

The good news is this is easy in Germany’s nightclubs, where it is the norm to buy a bottle of water instead of a bottle of beer when you want one!

A Safe And Secure Destination For Solo Travelers

Berlin is an incredibly safe city, and you can feel comfortable traveling here as a solo traveler.

The U.S. Department of State has given Germany a Level 2 travel advisory rating advising tourists to exercise increased caution in Germany due to terrorism.

But there is no mention of any crime risk or other dangers here.

Of course, no destination in the world is 100% safe, so you should still remain alert and take the usual precautions (such as not wearing flashy jewelry or walking alone at night), but Berlin is a city where you can rave or not or explore all day entirely alone without any safety concerns.

Another thing that makes Berlin safe, comfortable and easy to navigate for U.S. solo travelers is that almost everyone speaks English!

It’s nice to try and learn the language when you’re visiting any new destination, but knowing that you can communicate with the people around you in your native tongue is so reassuring.

Especially if you’re lost and you need to ask for directions.

Getting Around Berlin

Germany has a well-deserved reputation for its efficiency, particularly when it comes to public transport, and Berlin is a great example of this.

That makes it an incredibly easy city to get around as a solo traveler.

Berlin is a huge city, so you can explore it all on foot. But the buses, trains, and trams running through Berlin are the trinity of things solo travelers are looking for: clean, safe, and affordable.

A single ticket costs 3 euros ($3.30) but if you’re going to be making several journeys then it would be cheaper to get the Berlin Welcome Card.

This costs 36 euros ($40) for 72 hours and gives unlimited public transport throughout Berlin, perfect for a short break in the city.
