One of the most common questions travelers ask about Mexico is, “Is it safe?”
It’s true that there are certain parts of Mexico that American travelers are advised not to visit. These include states such as Colima, Sinaloa, and Guerrero.
But Los Cabos isn’t one of them!
In fact, in recent months, no high-impact crimes at all have been recorded in the city according to the Tribuna de Mexico.
And this officially makes Los Cabos one of the safest tourist destinations you can visit in Mexico.
There have been no crimes or impact thefts in Los Cabos this month.
The only crimes that have been reported are domestic violence and low-level fraud (which don’t tend to impact tourists).
Here’s why Los Cabos is one of the safest destinations in Mexico and a great place for travelers this winter:
The Beautiful Beaches Of Los Cabos
Los Cabos is a popular resort region in the Baja California Peninsula, right on Mexico’s Pacific coasts.
This means you can enjoy endless ocean views, which explains why the region is so well known for its stunningly beautiful beaches.
It’s worth noting that only some of the beaches in Los Cabos are swimmable, so if getting in the ocean is a crucial part of your vacation (it is for me!), then the best beaches to visit in the region include:
- Medano Beach. This is in the biggest resort area of the region and is the longest swimmable beach in Los Cabos. The beach here is popular and has a busy, bustling vibe.
- Lovers Beach. For something a little more remote, Lovers Beach can only be reached by boat. Take a snorkeling tour to Lovers Beach with Cabo San Lucas Tours for just $19.50. I chose this tour because it’s on a glass-bottomed boat, so you can see the sea life below as you travel.
- Santa Maria Beach. This is another secluded beaches, though you can access it independently by local bus service. This beach is quiet but great for swimming and snorkeling, so choose this if you want plenty of space and quiet.
Why Is Los Cabos So Popular?
One of the main reasons why Los Cabos is so popular is because it’s so easy to visit.
If you’re looking for a fly-and-flop vacation (with no real thinking required), this is a great place to go.
Los Cabos boasts an abundance of glitzy all-inclusive resorts, so all you have to do is turn up with your swimmers and a suitcase full of resort wear and be prepared to relax and unwind!
- Grand Velas. This is a glitzy and high-end all-inclusive resorts that sits at the very top end of the budget scale. This sleek and contemporary resort has been awarded with 5 Diamonds by the AAA. A 2 night stay from October 8 to October 10 for 2 adults would cost $1,346 per night for the most affordable room type.
- Marquis Los Cabos. This is an adults only resort, so a great choice if you want peace and relaxation away from the excitement of children. The excellent service is considered one of the highlights of this resort. It is also a much more affordable choice. A 2 night stay from October 8 to October 10 for 2 adults would cost $460 per night.
- Paradisos Los Cabos. Another adults only resort, this hotel is part of the Melia group. It boasts clean white suites, beautiful pools, and a laid back vibe. You’ll pay $494 per night to stay here.
How Safe Is Los Cabos?
I’ve already mentioned above that Los Cabos is considered one of the safest regions in Mexico.
But how does it compare to other Mexican resort towns? Establishing safety in the country is a little tricky, thanks to the U.S. State Department’s convoluted safety assessment.
Usually countries are given a high level 1-4 safety rating with 1 being the safest (Exercise Normal Precautions) and 4 meaning American travelers should visit the country (Do Not Travel).
But there is no 1 safety rating for Mexico: instead, safety is broken down from region to region.
Los Cabos is in the state of Baja California Sur. This has been given a Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) safety rating by the U.S. State Department due to crime.
But as the figures higher up in this piece clearly state, crime is not a concern for visitors to Los Cabos.
This goes a long way to explaining why this is such a safe and welcoming destination for American travelers right now.
