Some cities need very little introduction.
And thanks to its instantly recognizable ancient city walls and dramatic turquoise coastline, Dubrovnik is one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic spots.
According to a new report from the Dubrovnik Times, Dubrovnik has smashed its tourism record, already welcoming more than a million overnight visitors this year.
Guests from the UK and the USA are the two most frequent arrivals to the Croatian city.
Here’s why you should consider adding Dubrovnik to your bucket list too:
Something For Everyone
It might sound like a cliche, but Dubrovnik really is a city that has it all.
There’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for history and culture, relaxing beaches, or delicious food.
This makes it a great spot for group visits because it appeals to such a diverse demographic of people.
Standing on Dubrovnik’s city walls and enjoying the panoramic views of the sea is likely to appeal to everyone!
A Fascinating Walled City
You can’t talk about Dubrovnik without mentioning its walled city. Dubrovnik boasts one of the remaining intact, completely walled cities in Europe.
This city and the Old Town that surrounds it date back to the 7th century.
You can enter the Old Town through one of 3 Medieval gates. These are the Ploče Gate, Pile Gate, or the Buža Gate.
Once you’ve entered the Old Town and you’re in the walled city it is fully pedestrianized.
Not only does this add to the feeling of stepping back in time that you get when you’re in Dubrovnik, it also makes it feel much safer.
Although the crowd levels can be high, especially in the summer months, at least you don’t have to worry about looking for vehicles as well as human traffic!
Walk through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town and then climb the city walls which surround the Old Town.
These were built in the 13th Century and stand at 25 meters high which means that if you walk along the top of the walls, you can enjoy incredible views of the old town, Lokrum Island, and the Adriatic sea.
It’s a breathtaking view and one of the highlights of any trip to Dubrovnik, even if you’re not interested in history or old cities.
It will takearound 2 hours to walk the walls completely (longer if you keep stopping to take photos or enjoy the views!)
In the summer, try walking in the morning or early evening to avoid the heat of the day.
Take A Beach Day
Many travelers can’t imagine visiting Europe without spending some time relaxing on the beach, especially in the summer months.
And Dubrovnik is also the perfect place to take a beach day. Although many of Dubrovnik’s beaches are pebbly, this doesn’t stop them being great spots to relax and unwind.
They also have crystal-clear waters and epic views!
One of the best ways to explore the Dubrovnik coastline is to take out a kayak. It will allow you to see the city from a brand-new perspective.
But if you’d rather relax and unwind, then try Banje Beach, where there are plenty of beach chairs available to rent.
This is one of the most popular beaches in Dubrovnik and a popular spot with families and young people alike.
Visit The Game Of Thrones Filming Sites
One of the things that brought Dubrovnik to the attention of international travelers is that it was one of the main filming locations for the smash-hit TV show Game of Thrones.
If you’re a fan of the show, then you might want to spend your time in the city checking out its filming sites.
The filming locations for Red Keep, Black Water Bay, and Kings Landing can all be found in Dubrovnik.
You can find all of these spots yourself armed with a map and a little perseverance.
But if you’re a big fan and you don’t want to miss anything then sign up for one of the many Game of Thrones walking tours in the city.
These guided tours will show you all the best filming spots and give you access to other behind-the-scenes filming information and secrets.
