Planning your next tropical vacation? One of the most important aspects of planning any getaway is picking the right resort or hotel.
You can choose great flights and an amazing destination. But if your resort isn’t up to scratch, every day of your trip will be negatively affected. (Take this from someone who just spent two weeks in Mexico in a room with broken air conditioning!)
So where should you stay?
Right now, mine is a vote for Playa Del Carmen.
5 of the top 7 hotels in Mexico were in Playa del Carmen. That’s according to Travel and Leisure’s ‘World’s Best Awards’ survey which rated the best hotels in Mexico.
Here are the best of the best:
The 5 Best Resorts In Playa Del Carmen
2024’s best hotel in Mexico is la Casa de la Playa just south of Playa del Carmen. This resort boasts 63 sprawling suites and each has its own private pool and ocean view.
You’ll also find fine dining restaurants fronted by celebrity chefs and an extravagant spa offering too.
As you would expect, a stay in this resort won’t come cheap.
When I ran a dummy booking this morning the price was $2,183 a night for 2 people sharing one room if you visit at the beginning of September, booking directly with the resort.
The 3rd best resort in Mexico (and the second best in Playa Del Carmen) is the Hotel Xcaret Mexico. This was last year’s number one, so it has slipped in the rankings but is still a great choice.
The hotel is perched between a sandy beach and a river. And when you stay here you’ll also have unlimited access to all the Grupo Xcaret parks which is a particularly huge drawer for family travelers.
This resort is considerably cheaper too. I ran the same dummy booking with dates for the first week of September based on 2 adults sharing, and rooms were $961 per night, based on a 3-night stay.
This is followed by the Viceroy Riviera Maya in 4th place (3rd in the region), the Rosewood Mayakoba in 6th place (4th in the region), and the Hotel Xcaret Arte in 7th place (5th in the region).
Meaning 5 of the best 7 resort hotels in Mexico are officially in Playa Del Carmen, and there’s no better place to stay!
Why Pick Playa Del Carmen?
Even during the daytime, Playa Del Carmen feels like a party hub.
It’s a place with great vibes. The streets are walkable, there’s so much to see and do, and you’re never far from the beach.
Choosing a resort close to Playa del Carmen means that you’ll have the best of both worlds: the laid-back luxury and relaxation offered by a resort stay alongside the unique bars and nightlife of a bustling resort town.
If you want to party at the infamous Coco Bongo club, then there is also a branch in Playa del Carmen, meaning you won’t have to travel all the way to Cancun to join in the fun.
It’s also no coincidence that 3 of the hotels listed above are owned by the Xcaret group because the Xcaret parks are considered the best and most popular things to do in Playa Del Carmen.
I’ve only visited one of the Xcaret parks (we went to Xel-ha) and I’m not going to list this as an authentic and cultural experience.
But I will say that it was a whole heap of fun, a beautiful and well-organised park with so many activities to try, and that it was my kid’s favorite activity of our whole trip.
