On August 27th, Danish authorities announced that the classification of the Covid-19 virus as a critical societal threat was no longer required. As a result, the country of Denmark ends all Covid-19 restrictions for residents and tourists within its borders on September 10th.
Denmark One of the First Nations to Have Pandemic Related Restrictions
In March 2020, the Danish Parliament passed an executive order that classified the coronavirus as a critical threat to society. At that time a partial lockdown was begun in Denmark. Over time additional rules and restrictions were added, then relaxed, then reinforced again throughout the pandemic. To date, Denmark has 342,000 cases of the virus with over 2,500 fatalities.
On June 5th, the Danish government made an announcement that fully vaccinated travelers from specific OECD countries, which includes the United States and Canada, may travel to Denmark for any reason, including tourism. Travelers from the United States that were unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated at that time were required to present a negative PCR test result in order to enter the country.
The Epidemic Under Control in Denmark
The health officials in Denmark released a statement August 27th announcing that they decided to stop categorizing COVID-19 as a âsocially critical diseaseâ. This decision means that the legal basis for the pandemic related restrictions no longer exists. Therefore, all pandemic related restrictions within the country will cease on September 10th.
At the end of August 2021, over 70 percent of the population of Denmark has been fully vaccinated. The government believes the positive results are due to their âstrong epidemic controlâ. Therefore, the special rules set in the country to fight the virus are no longer needed.
Pandemic Related Restrictions Lifted in Denmark Next Month
Officials in Denmark have set the date to drop the COVID-19 restrictions. Mass gatherings in the country will resume and the coronapass requirements to visit venues within the country along with mask mandates will cease on September 10th.  According to a statement released by Danish authorities, âThe government has promised not to hold on to the measures longer than was necessary, and there we are now.â  The Danish government however, reserve the right to reinforce these Covid-19 restrictions, âIf the pandemic again threatens important functions in the society.â
This does not change the current entry restrictions for international travelers. For now, fully vaccinated Americans can enter Denmark for any reason. Those not fully vaccinated must show a negative test and take another test when they arrive.
Denmarkâs Health Minister Magnus Heunicke recently Tweeted, âThe hard work is not over, and a look out into the world shows why we must continue to be vigilant.â Heunicke also praised his home country for its âepidemic managementâ.
