If there’s one place on Earth where you can witness the most incredible marriage between paradisic beaches and centuries-old cultures, it’s the Mediterranean.
But as we all grow tired of the articles pushing Greece, Italy, or Spain down our throats, there’s another, far lesser-known gem that has emerged in the international travel scene as one of the region’s trendiest destinations.
That’s right, Cyprus welcomed a total of 2,758,627 tourists in the first nine months of 2024, setting a brand-new tourism record, and leaving travelers from all over the world wondering – is the dreamy island truly as good as they say?
Unfortunately for those of you looking to cut back on travel this year, the answer’s yes!
Here’s why:
You Still Have Time For An Incredible Beach Getaway
Most places around the world are getting way too cold to even fathom a beach holiday.
Not Cyprus, though.
With temperatures that hover around 78°F (26°C) during the day, even in October, you can still very much enjoy a sunbathing session or two along the island’s incredible coastline.
And the best part about all this is that even iconic places like Fig Tree Bay or Nissi Beach are quieter (and, subsequently, cheaper) than ever this time of year, so you can take in that Cypriot sunshine knowing full well you’re getting the best value for your money.
Before you pack your bags, though, I do want to note that after dark, temperatures can drop down to 56°F (13.5°C) – after all, even Mediterranean hubs aren’t entirely immune to fall weather – so make sure to bring a couple of light jackets for those late night strolls.
One Of The Cheaper Mediterranian Hubs
Sure, Cyprus isn’t Balkan cheap, but it isn’t Italy-expensive, either.
All in all, this is one of the best places in the Mediterranean where even budget travelers can get a lot of bang for their buck.
Let me show you how.
The coastline is filled with beautiful, amenity-filled hotels that charge pretty reasonable rates – just take a look at Lysithea Hotel, for example.
The rooms are clean and spacious, the hotel itself is located a mere 100 meters (~110 yards) away from the beach, and get this: rooms here start at just $50 a night!
Eating out is more on par with other Mediterranean countries, think $50 for a meal out for two, but unlike many other hotspots in the region, most attractions here are either completely free to enter or cost less than $10.
So Much Culture To Take In
The great thing about visiting Cyprus this time of year is that while you certainly can do a beach vacation, you don’t have to miss out on the “city break” experience, either.
There’s just so much culture, energy, and history to take in here that you’ll never have a dull second.
If it’s your first time in the country, I’d recommend focusing on a few unmissable cities and landmarks; otherwise, it’ll be too overwhelming.
My top picks would be Kourion, Paphos, the Church of Asinou and the Monastery of Kykkos (both found in the Troodos Mountains), and, of course, the gorgeous Nicosia (Cyprus’ capital).
Fall In Cyprus Is Anything But Boring
We all know that islands can seem, for lack of a better word, dead during the colder months when the summer crowds have dissipated.
Bur because Cyprus is such a thriving cultural hub on top of being a beachy paradise, the life and energy here never really goes away.
In fact, those of you lucky enough to travel to the Mediterranean island this fall will have the best time partaking in all the local events without having to suffocate in between thousands of other tourists.
The iconic Limassol Wine Festival, for example, is just around the corner, complete with tastings and live performances that’ll take place every day between September 28th and October 6th.
