The big city life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

When fall rolls around, small towns come alive with seasonal splendor showcasing the area’s natural beauty and historic charm.

Southern Living released a list of the top 10 ‘Under-The-Radar Mountain Towns’ to explore this fall, but it’s clear which one is the most fun.

Rather than get lost in the urban sprawl of New York City or another of the many East Coast’s notable cities, it’s the Alleghany Mountains that are calling your name.

Home to stunning views, timeless streets, and a family-friendly fall train ride, the lovely town of Frostburg, Maryland, makes for the perfect autumn getaway.

Frostburg’s Inviting Historic Downtown District

Frostburg may be small but it packs a punch! Nestled in the heart of the vast Alleghany Mountains lies this picturesque town home to about 7,000 residents.

Although, that’s not factoring in the students at the town’s very own Frostburg State University, which as you can imagine, brings life to the community with lively bars and sporting events.

They even have their own ‘beach’ with the soon-to-reopen Beach Club of Frostburg. Jimmy Buffet vibes in the mountains? Sign me up!

You’re in Maryland, after all, so you gotta savor all the crab dishes as much as possible!

While the ‘Beach Club’ is an unexpected delight there’s far more to see and do. In fact, Downtown Frostburg promotes a Historical Tour showcasing classic eateries, intriguing museums, and old-timey hotels.

If it were me, I’d soak up all the small-town charm at the historic Allegheny Trail House, a revamped Bed and breakfast dubbed ‘bicycle friendly’ to give you a glimpse of how people like to spend their time around here.

Downtown is very cyclist—and pedestrian-friendly, especially in fall. You can enjoy the crisp mountain air with a warm coffee in hand from one of the many delightful cafes, such as the top-rated Clatter Cafe, or head to one of the town’s staples, Main Street Books, to cozy up with a new read.

All in all, downtown shouldn’t be skipped, even if you’re just here to enjoy the wondrous natural surroundings.

Visitors Love The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

There’s no better way to explore the region than to hop aboard what’s become the area’s most popular attraction – the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR).

Right now is the perfect time to pencil in time to make your way to western Maryland to witness the state’s prettiest sites.

While Baltimore is one of the East Coast’s most underrated cities, Frostburg is undoubtedly the most underrated small town getaway, especially as autumn colors are now in full bloom.

There are 2 train rides the WMSR offers this fall you should keep your eye on, including one fun ride happening right now.

All Aboard The Polar Express!

Next up is more of a winter excursion, but begins just after Thanksgiving on November 29th. The WMSR’s Polar Express is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so you know it’s a hit!

While you’ll certainly still see some colorful tree lines, this hour-long ride is all about spreading holiday cheer with hot chocolate and cookies served, and of course, a Santa meet ‘n greet.

Tickets are on sale starting at $40 from Nov. 29th – Christmas Eve.
