A country that relies heavily on the income generated by its usually booming tourist trade, Greece was one of the first major travel destinations to ease its entry requirements for all travelers, as the country was keen to bring its tourism sector back to life. However, the new restrictions suggest a more cautious approach in the wake of rising cases. Greece Unveils New Requirements – Information For Travelers
Back in June, Greece had positioned itself to be the number one spot for travelers this summer when it lowered its entry requirements, at one point requiring passengers to only provide proof of a negative 72-hour PCR test or proof of being fully vaccinated in order to gain entry. However, in the wake of a flurry of positive cases of Covid-19, the country has altered its restrictions and made access to the country much less appealing for unvaccinated travelers.
Under the new restriction changes, unvaccinated travelers will only be able to enter indoor cinemas, theaters, museums, archaeological sites and gyms if they have proof of a negative rapid test taken within the last 48 hours. On top of this, venues will also have the ability to refuse access to unvaccinated patrons if they wish to do so – a course of action that could leave travelers with little to do in Greece if it was pursued.
Travelers who head to Greece for seasonal work will also be affected by other new restrictions. All unvaccinated public and private sector employees will have to undergo weekly tests at their own expense. Those who are unvaccinated and work in tourism, restaurants, cafes and bars will be subjected to twice-weekly tests at a cost of €10 each, with tests paid for by the employee. Workers will need to head to private facilities for these tests. Each of these new measures will come into effect on September 13th, lasting until March 31st.
