Zanzibar has allowed Kenyan low-cost carrier Jambojet to start direct flights between Mombasa and the island.
From July 1, 2024, the airline will fly four times a week between the two destinations, with fares starting from $113 for a one-way ticket.
Jambojet Managing Director and CEO Karanja Ndegwa said the new route marks a major milestone for the airline, as it gears up to celebrate its 10th anniversary in April.
The carrier was named the 2023 leading low-cost airline in Africa at the World Travel Awards and has flown over seven million passengers, 44 percent of whom were first-time flyers.
Zanzibar’s Minister of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport, Dr Khalid Salum Mohamed, said the airline will boost its number of international visitors.
Dr Mohammed said a majority of its travellers are tourists and business people.
“Considering Zanzibar’s 2050 Vision of enhancing the blue economy and increasing the number of visitors to our island, the expansion of infrastructure is essential to help achieve our goal and is a current national priority,” said Dr Mohamed.
Mr Ndegwa said the company’s decision to establish the route was driven by increasing demand and acceleration towards unlocking commercial opportunities within the region.
“Since its inception, Jambojet has been focusing on connecting people in the under-served or unserved routes. Our decision to launch the Mombasa – Zanzibar route is poised to strengthen relations between the two countries,” said Mr Ndegwa.
Mr Ndegwa who met Dr Mohamed and other Zanzibar transport officials, said the new route will bolster tourism, trade and other investments.
He said the cultural heritage, warmth and richness of Zanzibar continue to attract travellers from across the world.
“We are glad to be playing a part in that journey while showcasing Mombasa’s pristine offering as our secondary hub,” added Mr Ndegwa.
The regional low-cost airline flies to seven destinations from its hub in Nairobi – Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Malindi, Ukunda (Diani), Lamu, and Goma in Eastern DRC. The airline also operates three routes from its secondary hub in Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, and from July 2024 to Zanzibar. It also has cargo operations across its network.
