The Mexican government has pledged its commitment to ending the long waiting times that arriving passengers have been experiencing at Cancún International Airport.
Being the nation’s second busiest airport, Cancún International Airport continues to welcome tourists – with record numbers continuing to arrive into the city – famous for its stunning weather, beautiful white-sand beaches and clear-blue sea.
Passengers Waiting As Long As 2-Hours To Get Through Immigration
However, it certainly has not been all ‘fun and games’ for tourists that have been arriving into the city’s airport – with visitors having to wait for as long as 2-3 hours, with most wait times being 30- 90 minutes to be processed at immigration.
Many of the unhappy passengers have even taken to social media to display their frustration – with photographs showing long queues, and only a handful of stations open to process the large number of people, becoming an all-too-familiar story at Cancún International Airport. And, this is still happening today, despite additional immigration agents having been brought in at the end of last year (2021) to try and combat the issue.
Government Officials Pledge To Improve The Immigration Process At Cancún International Airport
However, there is hope that passengers arriving into Mexico’s Cancún International Airport will soon have a much smoother and more pleasant experience upon their arrival – with the country’s tourism sector having recently met with government officials to discuss improving the airport’s immigration process.
Also discussed was an issue that has seen a number of passengers – in particular those coming from South American nations – being deported upon their arrival at Cancún International Airport.
How Will They Look To Streamline The Immigration Process At Cancún International Airport?
Just last week it was reported that fifty new immigration agents had been brought into the airport to help decrease the waiting time for arriving passengers – with the required number of immigration agents needing to be at least five in order for passengers from three or four different flights to be processed in a timely fashion.
Along with the introduction of more human resources, the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, also announced that new technology – in the form of digital modules – will be brought into the arrivals halls at Cancún International Airport. It is believed that with an increase in the number of immigration agents – combined with the planned new technology – passengers will be processed far more efficiently and quickly upon their arrival.
At this present time, Cancún International Airport is the main hub that serves a number of the state’s main tourist destinations – including the likes of Tulum and Playa del Carmen, amongst others.
And, so the news that plans have been set out to improve the on-arrival experience of passengers landing at the airport in Cancún will certainly be ‘music to the ears’ of both the airport’s staff – as well as the huge number of visitors expected to arrive in the coming months.
It was recently reported that an estimated 15 million seats – on planes due to arrive into Cancun – have already been booked for the year, with hotels in Playa del Carmen also reporting that they are set to be at 100% capacity during the Easter holidays. Therefore, there is no doubt that the situation at Cancún International Airport not only has to be improved – but that significant changes to its immigration process will need to be implemented as soon as possible.
