If you’ve been dreaming of a tropical beach getaway, these 4 beaches in Mexico were just ranked among the best in the world by Lonely Planet.
In a new travel book highlighting the 100 best beaches in the world, several beach destinations in Mexico made the cut.
Many of these beaches are already among the most popular destinations in the country.
Here are the top beaches in Mexico to add to your bucket list ASAP:
1. Isla Holbox
Playa Holbox is considered to be one of the best beaches in Mexico, and it’s not hard to see why. This gorgeous beach on tranquil Isla Holbox is truly a Caribbean paradise.
Isla Holbox is a laidback, car-free island where the primary methods of transportation are golf carts and bicycles.
To get to Isla Holbox, you’ll first need to drive or take a bus from Cancun to Chiquila, two hours to the north. Then, you’ll hop on a quick 25-minute ferry ride to reach the island.
Although Isla Holbox is rapidly growing in popularity, it’s still a welcome break from the fast-paced energy and crowds of Cancun. At only 26 miles long and 1 mile wide, Holbox is small and relaxed.
And on the beautiful Playa Holbox, you might even be lucky enough to spot whale sharks while swimming or snorkeling!
2. Tulum
Another one of the best beaches in Mexico is in Tulum. While the majority of Tulum is actually in the jungle, Playa Paraiso, the main public beach, is a gem along the coastline.
Tulum is one of the trendiest destinations in Mexico, attracting travelers with its stunning beaches, vibey restaurants and nightlife, high-end hotels and beach clubs, and boho-chic style. It’s also one of the best digital nomad destinations in Mexico.
Although Tulum is known for being a pricier, splurge-worthy destination, it’s still possible to travel or live here on a budget.
It’s also easier than ever to get to Tulum thanks to the opening of a new international airport with nonstop flights from half a dozen U.S. cities launching in March.
3. Playa Balandra
Playa Balandra in La Paz is another one of the top beaches in Mexico. This is the only beach from the list that’s not located on the Caribbean coast in Quintana Roo.
Instead, this beach is on the opposite side of Mexico in Baja California Sur. And it’s easy to see why this gorgeous beach has been ranked among the best in Mexico.
La Paz is swiftly growing in popularity with travelers. Just two hours by car or bus from Los Cabos, La Paz is more affordable and less touristy and home to some of the best-kept secret beaches of Mexico, like Playa Balandra. This protected beach is unique with its clear, shallow waters and soft white sand.
It’s a popular destination for boat tours or stand-up paddle boarding.
4. Isla Mujeres
Finally, Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is one of the best beaches in Mexico. Isla Mujeres is a small island near Cancun that is surging in popularity right now.
It’s only a 30-minute ferry ride from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, but it feels a world away. This tiny island has a calmer, more laidback vibe and truly stunning beaches.
You can visit Isla Mujeres on a day trip from Cancun if you want to check it out for yourself, or you can spend several days there if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway.
Although the island is small, you’re sure to fall in love with its charm and great beaches. Playa Norte, the main beach, is a lot of fun because there are tons of restaurants and bars nearby.
