When it comes to traveling to a place as popular and wildly beloved as Mexico, choosing just one city to experience is far more difficult than you’d think.
We’re constantly bombarded with social media posts telling us that X or Y is the ultimate hub for a Mexican vacation – with each claim contradicting the next – but where are Americans actually traveling right now?
The newest data reported by local airports shows that there are four clear frontrunners in the country in terms of visitor numbers, and today, we’ll be discovering them all.
Below, you’ll find top Mexico destinations among the 3+ million U.S. travelers that have crossed the border these past three months:
4. Los Cabos
Hailed as one of Mexico’s most iconic beach hubs, the list wouldn’t be complete without Los Cabos, one of the only places on Earth where you’ll get to see the desert meet the most pristine-looking waters.
It’s not hard to see why people want to experience this legendary city so much.
What is surprising, though, is the fact that they’re willing to look past the (very) hefty price tag that comes attached to a Los Cabos getaway – after all, we’re talking about the most expensive beach destination in all of Mexico.
It costs the average tourist anywhere between $425 and $546 a day to vacation here, which is pretty steep considering that prices in most comparable Mexican destinations are at least 15% lower.
However, whether it’s the fact that this is where some of the country’s most breathtaking beaches are located, all the incredible wellness opportunities, or the fact that the local airport just received the Inclusive Tourism seal, one thing’s for sure – travelers feel like the sky-high prices are actually worth it!
3. Puerto Vallarta
Moving on to a more budget-friendly (yet just as beautiful) destination, Puerto Vallarta has nabbed the No. 3 spot on today’s list, and if you’ve been keeping up to date with the latest travel news, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.
The city has been trending these past few months as a cleaner, more authentic alternative to busy Cancun.
Not only was it named among the top beach destinations in Mexico that locals love the most, but it was also hailed as the perfect haven to avoid sargassum season this summer – if that’s not enough to convince you to pack your bags immediately, I don’t know what is!
2. Mexico City
Though Mexico’s gorgeous capital has been dethroned as the country’s most visited destination for quite some time now, the fact that it still manages to outperform even its dreamiest neighbors despite not offering travelers that iconic beachy experience speaks a lot about just how fascinating the city is.
Mexico City has just so much to offer to every single traveler, it’s hard not to fall in love with it.
Are you a history buff? The Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, and the Templo Mayor archaeological site will leave you at a loss for words.
An art lover? The colorful murals of Diego Rivera will inspire you beyond your wildest dreams.
A foodie? I don’t even need to tell you the unbelievable journey your palate will go through here.
And if a typical sunbathing session is still on your must-do list, traveling to and from the gorgeous capital is a breeze, so you won’t have to compromise after all!
1. Cancun
True to form, Cancun has topped yet another “Most popular Mexico Destinations List,” and, let’s face it, it’s easy to see why.
Not only was the city just crowned the most popular destination in all of Latin America, but the plethora of new exciting places and events coming to Cancun constantly always keeps travelers coming back for more.
And while there’s a lot to be said about the issues you might bump into while visiting a place that’s as wildly popular as Cancun, it’s also important to note that the way local authorities are moving quickly to dissipate many of the most major concerns leads us to believe that the city’s status as a top-tier travel destination isn’t going away anytime soon.
