If you’re dreaming of jetting off to a sunny island this summer but don’t know where, exactly, you want to go yet, you might be feeling the urge to rush through the decision and just pick the first place that pops into your mind (and fits your budget) – after all, there’s not that much time left to plan.
I’m telling you right now, though, that’s not a good idea.
This article right here will help you find an awesome, exciting destination that checks all the boxes within a couple of minutes.
How?
With the help of Bounce’s most recent Island Index Report, a ranking of the world’s best island destinations based on more than 10 relevant criteria, including (but not limited to) climate, accommodation costs, number of beaches, and things to do.
Many of the world’s most popular summery hubs were carefully evaluated, and these five places were the ones that scored the highest:
5. Mallorca
Starting off the list with a heavy hitter, Mallorca has once again reestablished its status as one of the world’s dreamiest summer getaways.
This summer, the Spanish island is promising travelers 25 °C (77°F) temperatures, little to no rainfall, and 123 pristine-looking beaches that are just waiting to be explored.
And this isn’t just a pretty beach hub with nothing to see or do past sunset, either.
As you walk through the crowded streets of Palma, take in the views of the city’s iconic Gathic Cathedral, or revel in the rustic charm of Sóller, you’ll get just how much more there is to Mallorca beyond its world-famous coastline.
4. Puerto Rico
Don’t have a passport but still want to experience some of that beachy island fun everyone keeps talking about?
Look no further than Puerto Rico, a country whose beaches have been forever embedded into our minds thanks to the dozens (if not hundreds) of movies and music videos that have showcased just how gorgeous this Caribbean hub is.
So, take this as a sign to finally see for yourself what the fuss is all about.
Between the vibrant neighborhoods of San Juan, the fairytale-like shores of Vieques, and the timeless allure of El Yunque National Forest, you’ll get to enjoy an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience without having to venture off too far away from home.
3. Crete
Next up, we have Crete, an island that has catapulted to the heights of international popularity these past few years, and, at the risk of sounding biased, one of my all-time favorites.
There’s just nothing not to love about this dreamy Greek hub.
The weather is consistently beach-friendly but not too hot, the waters of the Aegean are to die for, and the cities (of which Chania would be my top recommendation) are so deeply fascinating and gorgeous to look at that, in my opinion, Crete needs to become a year-round hotspot – the famous coastline is far from the only thing that’ll leave you speechless.
Another great thing about coming here is that you can make your trip as luxurious or budget-friendly as you want.
While there are plenty of indulgent all-inclusive resorts scattered across the island, cute, spotless little hotels and rentals that charge anywhere between $30 and $70 a night are pretty common, too.
Food is also reasonably priced and even better than anything you might expect, so there’s that, too.
2. Zanzibar
If you’re tired of overcrowded streets and beaches overtaken by hundreds of tourists, Zanzibar might just be that perfect summer haven, even if a 16+ hour flight sounds intimidating.
As much as I can try, I’ll never be able to describe to you just how insanely beautiful beaches like Kendwa, Paje, and Nungwi are – the same goes for the labyrinthine alleys of Stone Town – so you’ll have to book a ticket and see for yourself.
And I know, airfare can put a big dent in your travel budget.
But Zanzibar itself is pretty affordable – gorgeous 4-star hotels charge between $40 and $50 a night, whereas the average restaurant meal for two rarely surpasses the $28 mark, so it should all balance itself out.
1. Phuket
The proud No.1 title holder is none other than Phuket, a place known for its heavenly weather, world-class beaches, and great prices – in short, the ultimate summer paradise.
And whether you’re an avid beachgoer excited to explore everything from the vibrant pulse of Patong to the serene tranquility of Kata Noi, a foodie who can’t wait to take in the flavors at the Banzaan Fresh Market, or a sightseer eager to finally experience the famous Bang Pae Waterfall, Phuket will exceed even your wildest expectations.
