It’s easy to see why Europe has always been (and will likely continue to be) one of the first places that pops into your head when you think of where you’d want to live and work if you were given a choice.
The overall quality of life is remarkably higher than what you’d find in most places across the world, the culture is captivating, and the views are incredible.
However, when going someplace as stunningly diverse and unknown as Europe (at least for most of us), it’s always important to do your due diligence beforehand.
Luckily for you, ClikSlice has already conducted a study on the matter, scoring various European destinations based on factors like internet connectivity, cost of living, and number of sunny days.
And though the ranking featured many of the destinations you’d expect, like Lisbon and Athens, there was one surprising Spanish island that nabbed the No. 1 spot:
A Sunny Haven
Gran Canaria, one of the most gorgeous destinations you’ll find in the famous Canary Islands archipelago, is the ultimate sunny haven, seeing more than 320 days of sunshine a year.
This goes to show that its reputation as the “island of Eternal Spring” is much more than just a marketing slogan, it’s a reality that’ll make everyone experiencing it for the first time feel like they’ve hit the jackpot!
When you combine the balmy (71°F or 21°F) weather with the black lava and white sanded beaches, you get a place that’s unlike anything even the most seasoned travelers have seen in their lifetime – and it’s definitely worth exploring.
Plenty To See And Do
While just about anyone would love to sit around and take in Gran Canaria’s jaw-dropping views all day, the island has more to offer travelers and part-time residents than just beautiful sights.
The regional capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is not only a colorful hub that comes alive through the many exciting events that take place year-round (more on these below) but also home to one of the most stunning beaches in Europe – Las Canteras – so beach lovers, take notes.
If you’re more interested in those fun events I mentioned instead, you’ll be happy to learn that the famous Carnival, which mostly takes place throughout February, is still going on in Maspalomas (March 7th – March 17th).

High-Speed Network And Plenty Of Coworking Spaces
If there’s one thing all remote workers can appreciate, it’s a good internet connection and a place where you can be your most productive self – and Gran Canaria offers all that on top of the surreal views and paradisic beaches.
Not only is the average internet speed in the region 200 MBPS, but places like Hashtag WorkSpace, Coworking Canary Islands, and Soppa de Azul come highly reviewed and ready to offer every digital nomad a fun, productive place to work.
A Great Value Destination
I want to say right off the bat that Gran Canaria was one of the pricier places to make it to ClikSlice’s ranking; however, in the grand scheme of things, what you’ll be paying is still pretty reasonable, considering what you’re getting in return.
According to Numbeo, a three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant will only set you back around $43.8, a 1.5-liter bottle of water is $1.02, and a 500-ml glass of domestic beer doesn’t even surpass the $0.99 mark.
Rent can be a bit pricier than what you’d find in other places in the region, but still pretty reasonable.
A 1-bedroom apartment in the city center goes for roughly $766 a month, whereas those willing to go further into the outskirts can pay around $615 for a similar place.
Before I go, I also wanted to let you know that Skyscanner estimates April to be one of the cheapest months to fly from the U.S. to Gran Canaria, so if you want to take a short trip there first to see if the place meets your criteria, now is the best time to book those tickets.
