European hubs have always been favored by solo travelers.
These are the places that promise modern-day wanderers breathtaking sights, fascinating cultures, and a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere that represents everything travelers are trying to leave back home in the U.S.
But while the likes of Lisbon, Prague, and Warsaw have already established themselves as some of the continent’s top destinations for solo travelers, this time, it was a far lesser-known spot that took the crown.
A new Booking report showed that Syros, Greece surpassed every single other European hub in terms of accommodations and walkability, emerging as the hottest destination among those traveling alone.
So, why is this (admittedly gorgeous) island only now coming out of the shadows of its better-known neighbors, and what does it have to offer to solo travelers, a demographic that only keeps growing as time goes on?
The Ultimate Mediterranean Escape
Nestled in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Aegean, Syros is what I’d describe as the ultimate Mediterranean escape.
With year-round sunshine, temperatures that hover around 25°C (77°F), and the type of fun-loving, laid-back vibe that all Greek islands are known for, Syros is truly the place to go if you’re looking to leave the stresses of day-to-day life behind.
And with beaches like Galissas, Agathopes, and Megas Gialos at your disposal, you can spend your days lounging in the soft golden sand and feeling the warm Mediterranean sun against your skin – my top tip, though, would be to bring your own towel and umbrella instead of renting a sun chair.
Not only is it cheaper and what most locals do, but it allows you to go beach-hopping, which, on an island like this, is never a bad idea.
One Of The Cheapest Greek Islands You’ll Come Across
OK, so you can’t go vacationing on a Greek island and expect to pay peanuts – that’s a given.
However, when you compare Syros to other similar islands in the Cyclades, like Mykonos or Santorini, for example, what you’re expected to pay here seems VERY reasonable.
That’s because Syros has yet to become overridden by mass tourism, and establishments are actually built to cater to the large resident Greek population, which, believe it or not, can’t afford to pay holiday-level prices on the regular.
A 15-minute taxi ride costs roughly $15; however, I can’t recommend booking your transportation online enough.
That way, you review the pricing beforehand and can make a well-informed decision – who knows how much that taxi driver you randomly found at the airport will ask for that same exact ride?
Gorgeous, centrally-located rentals are easy to find for as little as $60 a night, whereas a filling 3-course meal for two people at your average restaurant rarely sets you back more than $45.
So Much To Do And See
If you’ve never traveled solo before and are anxious about how you’ll fill your days abroad, know that there’s nothing to worry about.
Not having someone to constantly keep you company can get a bit dull elsewhere, but there’s just so much to do and see in Syros that it’s impossible to get bored.
After a long day at the beach, you can catch a show at the Apollon Theatre, walk around Miaouli Square, or go on a church sightseeing excursion that starts with the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George.
I’d also highly recommend taking a traditional Greek cooking class or a boat tour to a nearby island – not only will you learn and see (and eat!) a lot, but you’ll also have a great opportunity to make some connections along the way.
A Safe Haven
While safety is the No. 1 concern for almost every traveler on Earth, those going somewhere foreign and remote alone are that much more invested in ensuring a peaceful, trouble-free experience.
And as you can see from these Numbeo stats, there’s little for you to worry about when coming to Syros.
The island boasts a remarkable 94.73 safety index, which, when you compare it to New York’s 49.84, really puts into perspective how quiet, inviting, and solo traveler-friendly this gorgeous Greek hub is.
Remember, though, that taking normal precautions like not going to secluded places at night alone is still a good idea, so stay safe out there and have fun!
