Forget about Cancun, American travelers can now fly directly from the U.S. to this trendy Mexican beach town thanks to the launch of new international flights.
Tulum is one of the hottest destinations in Mexico, and with a brand-new international airport, it’s now possible to fly there nonstop from several cities in the United States.
Although the Tulum airport officially opened in December, it only started receiving international flights from the U.S. this week.
Here’s everywhere you can currently fly nonstop to Tulum from, plus what this means for travelers:
Why Fly Direct To Tulum?
First of all, let’s talk about why this is a big deal for travelers.
Tulum has exploded in popularity in recent years, and yet this trendy beach destination hasn’t had its own airport until now, meaning you had to fly into Cancun first.
Cancun is also a very popular destination and has an extremely busy airport, so many travelers found themselves waiting in long lines to get through passport control, baggage claim, and customs.
Then it takes anywhere from 1.5 hours (if there’s no traffic) to 2.5 hours or more of drive time to get from Cancun International Airport to Tulum.
You can take the bus for $15 to $20 one-way or book a private transfer for $100 to $150 one-way.
Obviously, getting from Cancun to Tulum is time-consuming, and if you book a private transfer, it can quickly become expensive, too.
Being able to fly nonstop to Tulum is a game-changer because it means you’ll save time, skip worrying about transportation logistics, and be able to enjoy more time on the beach!
Nonstop Flights To Tulum
Which cities in the U.S. have nonstop flights to Tulum?
Beginning this week, you’ll be able to fly direct to Tulum from a number of U.S. cities.
American Airlines will launch nonstop flights to Tulum on March 28, 2024 from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas, and Miami, Florida.
Flights from Charlotte and Miami will be daily year-round, and flights from Dallas-Fort Worth will be twice daily year-round.
Delta Air Lines is also launching nonstop service to Tulum on March 28, 2024. Travelers will be able to fly directly from Delta’s hub in Atlanta, Georgia to Tulum on daily year-round flights.
United Airlines will also offer nonstop flights to Tulum beginning March 31, 2024. This airline will connect Chicago, Illinois, Houston, Texas, and Newark to Tulum.
Flights will be daily (or twice daily for Houston) year-round.
Other Airlines With Nonstop Flights To Tulum
Although the three airlines above are beginning flights this week, several other airlines have announced new flights to Tulum as well.
JetBlue Airways announced it will begin nonstop flights to Tulum from New York on June 13, 2024, while Air Canada will begin nonstop flights from Toronto and Montreal on May 3, 2024.
It’s expected that more airlines will also begin service to Tulum before the end of the year.
Is Flying Direct To Tulum Cheaper?
You might be wondering if flying nonstop to Tulum is cheaper or more expensive than flying to Cancun.
If you live in a city that currently has nonstop flights to Tulum, it is likely cheaper to fly directly there!
For example, flights from Atlanta to Cancun are $294 round-trip for a week in May on Delta. For the same dates, it’s only $282 round-trip from Atlanta to Tulum.
Even if you live in a city that does not have nonstop flights to Tulum, it’s still probably cheaper to fly into Tulum rather than Cancun.
For example, flying direct from Minneapolis to Cancun is $575 round-trip in May on Delta. But flying from Minneapolis to Tulum with a layover in Atlanta is only $377 round-trip for the same dates!
