Safety is one of the main concerns for Americans going to Mexico, and we can’t really blame them.
Every now and then, Mexico gets portrayed in the U.S. media as incredibly dangerous for tourists, with mainstream news channels citing gang violence and urban violence as widespread issues and urging the public to stay away.
As those of you who have been to the country will know, however, these are seldom accurate depictions of the reality on the ground, and as the Mexican President himself has stated, Mexico may be ‘even safer’ than the United States.
Today, we have received yet another proof that the sunny hub is a low-risk destination, as a hugely popular resort zone has been named the safest to visit in Mexico this winter:
Los Cabos Is Officially The Safest Destination In Mexico
According to the latest crime incidence report released by Baja California Sur’s State Security Board, it now has the lowest rate of murders in Mexico in terms of recurrence of the crime.
Home to Los Cabos, an increasingly popular resort zone straddling the Pacific Ocean that’s currently challenging Cancun’s decades-long rule as a leader in tourism, the state also posted low figures for femicide and kidnapping.
This is great news for tourists in Los Cabos, which comprises the twin beach towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, as they are not exposed to significant levels of violence while vacationing in the area.
As the State Attorney himself has reiterated, Cabo has the lowest crime levels in 10 years, but it still begs the question: how did it get here?
Why Is Cabo So Safe?
For years now, Los Cabos authorities – as well as officials in the wider state – have been investing robustly in safety in tourist areas.
These have included cracking down at shouting, rude taxi drivers who may come across as threatening to airport arrivals, ensuring scamming practices are eradicated, increasing patrolling on roads, and deploying more police to beach zones.
Recently, a single robbery at gunpoint where no tourist got hurt led city leaders to ramp up security dramatically. Now, you are unlikely to take ten steps in downtown Cabo without running into the reassuring presence of an officer on duty.
To draw a comparison, armed robberies take place every day in major tourist destinations in the United States, such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, but these have never warranted a firm response from local governors, especially when it concerns the safety of visitors.
In Cabo, on the other hand, all it took was one unfortunate event, where no casualties were reported at that, for a ‘Tourist Batallion’ to be installed.
Los Cabos Police Is Trained By U.S. Authorities
Additionally, Los Cabos police have received training from the U.S. Government, further boosting safety levels.
Washington is aware the paradisaical Pacific town is extremely sought-after among U.S. citizens for their end-of-year getaways, and it has not hesitated in partnering with its Mexican counterparts to ensure policing standards stay high.
In August alone, as many as 300 newly trained officers were deployed in Cabo, adding to the destination’s already heavily fortified defenses.
Other than the fact they feel extremely safe, another reason why Americans love vacationing in Cabo is the developed hospitality scene.
World-Class Hospitality
Nowhere in Mexico, or in fact, in the Latin American world, will they find the same level of comfort, world-class amenities, and unique blend of luxury and nature as they do here.
Though overnight rates across the region average an eye-watering US$600, tourists are not reluctant to splurge when they’re actively seeking the royal treatment.
