“The South” is a vast region of the U.S., including North Carolina, which sounds like an oxymoron. But what may actually be moron-ic is writing off what’s known as the ‘Deep South’.

No, it’s not all Natty Light-drinking, Rebel Flag-bearing, closed-minded hillbillies.

Given a chance, penetrating the Deep South can make for the adventure of a lifetime, whether it’s Louisiana’s hidden beaches or Alabama’s picturesque waterfalls.

Although Gulf Shores is undoubtedly ‘Bama’s most popular getaway, it may increase tenfold with the exciting announcement that this city will be offering commercial flights for the first time ever!

But there’s another Alabama coastal treasure too often overlooked – a tranquil town boasting bayside bliss and southern charm. Southern Living went as far as saying it’s ‘The Most Underrated Vacation Spot.

Century-Old Stays & ‘French Quarter’ Vibes

New Orleans’s most famous district isn’t as unique as you might think. While it might be bigger, Fairhope may prove the age-old adage that size doesn’t matter.

Why? Even with blocks and blocks of wrought-iron balconies and photogenic buildings, you certainly won’t waft the night before like you would in New Orleans.

Plus, there’s a certain intangible charm to smaller towns, right? Fairhope certainly has it.

The small yet delightful sliver of town known as the ‘French Quarter’ exudes character and nostalgia with vibrant French-inspired architecture but no Sunday morning aftermath.

French settlers certainly left their mark, and it has been immaculately preserved. Best of all, you can enjoy the same delicious grub you would in New Orleans, but less touristy and more affordable.

I mean, do you really wanna pay $20 for a bowl of Gumbo? You won’t have to at Tamara’s.

Fairhope beholds some incredible historic stays too, whether it be upscale resorts or cozy Bed & Breakfasts.

Among the top-rated is The Fairhope Inn, set in a revamped 1906 home originally serving the community as a makeshift fish market.

Don’t fret, though. According to the recent guests’ stellar reviews, there’s no word of any stench left behind.

For travelers seeking a mix of luxury and history, however, there’s only a place for you. That’s the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, originally built in the 1840’s and now offering all the modern comforts you desire overlooking the Mobile Bay for epic sunsets.

Fairhope’s Bayside Bliss And Welcoming Locals

Have you ever watched Peter Santanello on YouTube? He’s become quite a sensation in the travel world, whose videos typically draw millions of viewers.

Recently, he had the pleasure of visiting Fairhope, where locals couldn’t have been more welcoming and proud to show off their beloved bayside haven.

Equal parts charming and friendly, Fairhope prove “southern hospitality” is real after all. In fact, more and more outsiders are moving here. They love it so much, largely because Fairhope welcomes all walks of life.

Remember what I said about the South? Never judge a book by its cover.

What may also surprise you is Fairhope’s thriving arts scene with highlights such as Gallery By The Bay, springtime’s Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival, along with various artisan shops dotting this city of 25,000 residents.

But what’s obvious is that Fairhope is about as laid back as it gets. The idyllic coastline is the perfect place to unwind for a quick weekend getaway or long-term stay.

Take a stroll down the scenic Fairhope Pier or meander along the waterfront known as “town square” with beautiful parks, quaint beaches, and bayside vacation rentals.

Just know you do need a license to fish, but if you prefer to leave it to the pros, take advantage of Fairhope’s phenomenal seafood scene like local favorite Sunset Pointe.

Reaching Fairhope Is A Breeze – And Only Getting Easier!

Fairhope may be off-the-radar as it’s sandwiched between Gulf Shores and Mobile, but this is actually to your advantage.

Alabama may be commonly known as a road trip destination, but Mobile’s airport is only a 45-minute drive from Fairhope, with flights from major hubs, such as Dallas, Houston, and Washington D.C.

On the flip side, with Gulf Shores opening its airport to the public for the first time ever in May 2025, Fairhope will only become easier to access as it, too, is only 45 minutes away.

Uber, Lyft, and boring ol’ taxis all operate in and around Fairhope, making transit much more convenient.
