Far-flung but worth the trek – nearly 80 million people crossed the dividing line of Europe and Asia in 2024.
Split by the Bosphorus Strait, travelers can spend their time on the European side or Asian side of the city, and as someone who has had the privilege of visiting the world’s trendiest city, I can attest both sides are worth exploring.
Whether it’s astounding mosques, buzzing bazaars, seaside eateries, or action-packed Istiklal Avenue, there’s never a dull moment in what’s become travelers’ favorite metropolis.
Better yet, there are numerous nonstop flights departing the U.S. on one of the world’s most renowned airlines.
I know what you’re thinking, “stop stalling, Sam! Unveil this magical city you speak of!”.
At your service.
As we’re now a week settled into 2025, there’s no better way to kick off the new year than to plan a trip to what’s become a global hotspot for travelers everywhere – Istanbul, Turkiye.
Especially since Americans no longer need a visa and Turkish currency (lira) continues to favor travelers’ wallets.
Shop ‘Til You Drop & Feast In Turkish Delights
Istanbul is great for all types of travelers as it’s super affordable and easy to navigate. And while there have been some safety issues in other parts of Turkiye, it’s a massive country, and Istanbul isn’t a place where you need to keep your head on a swivel.
Well, with the caveat being just don’t make the mistake I did by not doing thorough research and booking a hostel in the dark alleys of Taksim Square.
Other than that, Istanbul’s picturesque streets are your oyster. Known for ample bazaars to peruse, the most popular is the Grand Bazaar, a great place to buy anything from souvenir trinkets to local spices and gold jewelry on the cheap.
You could easily spend half your day wandering Istanbul’s vast bazaars and vendor-lined alleyways reminiscent of Morocco’s souks if you’ve ever been.
That brings me to your next must in Istanbul – feasting on Turkiye’s underrated cuisine and incomparable coffee.
You’ll find hundreds of cozy cafes throughout the city serving flavorful Turkish coffee with a thick mud-like consistency, a stark contrast to Starbucks’ sugary concoctions back home.
Turkish pizza is also really popular as well as Turkish breakfasts. In other words, there’s no way you’ll go hungry in Istanbul, especially with the lira’s conversion rate being approximately 35 for every US dollar.
One Trip, One City: Visit Europe & Asia The Same Day
Istanbul is a unicorn. Where else can you spend half your day in Europe and cap off the night in Asia?
Istanbul’s European side is where a majority of the main attractions are located, such as Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the aforementioned Grand Bazaar.
But don’t sleep on the Asia side with vibrant neighborhoods like Kadıköy with trendy cafes, lively bars, and where I experienced my first Turkish bathhouse – and you should too!
For the best of both worlds, I recommend booking a boat tour, which you can easily flag down at multiple points along the scenic waterfront.
It’s quite literally impossible to miss the boats as there are so many to choose from. I’d also recommend booking in person as some operators will haggle.
If you ask me, I think the European side makes for a better base to see all the sights, but Kadıköy alone is worth venturing to the Asian side for at least an afternoon or fun night out.
Plus, there are so many luxurious hotels that won’t break the bank. For sample size, 5-star Sura Hagia Sophia Hotel İstanbul is in the $70’s per night through spring.
A Digital Nomad’s Dream Destination
2024 was a big year for Turkiye in more ways than one, but Istanbul seems to have benefitted the most.
Turkiye launched a digital nomad visa last April. As such, nomads worldwide saw the opportunity of a lifetime to enjoy an affordable lifestyle in one of the world’s most captivating cities.
Only requiring a monthly income of $3,000, getting approved is relatively straightforward, and the country’s currency issues favor long-term stays.
Aligning with cheap cafes and co-working spaces are very affordable apartments. You can score monthly rentals on Airbnb in the $700 – $800 range, but you better book it when you see it; they’re snatched up quickly!
