Traveling to this Mexican hotspot just got easier.
Tulum is one of the hottest destinations on the Riviera Maya in Mexico, but there hasn’t been a way to travel there directly — until now.
Opening in December 2023, Tulum International Airport will begin welcoming flights directly to this trendy beach destination.
Previously, travelers had to fly into Cancun, located two hours to the north. From Cancun International Airport, it’s over 1.5 hours by car to Tulum, and it can take much longer with traffic.
This added several extra hours of travel time in getting to Tulum.
But with the new airport, travelers will be able to fly directly to Tulum. Upon arrival, visitors will be just a 10-minute drive from the heart of town and Tulum’s amazing beaches.
Delta Launching Flights To Tulum
Delta Air Lines is the first U.S. airline to launch a nonstop flight to Tulum, but many more airlines are likely to follow suit in the coming months.
Delta announced that it will begin a new service from the airline’s hub in Atlanta to Tulum starting March 28, 2024. It will be a daily service, and it will come just in time for the busy spring break season as many American tourists flock to Mexico.
Right now, Delta offers a plethora of nonstop flights to Cancun (which is a 2.5-hour flight from Atlanta) but this will be the first direct flight to Tulum.
It will give travelers easy access to this buzzy beach destination without having to transit through Cancun first, saving precious hours of travel time.
It’s expected that this flight will take just over 2.5 hours from Atlanta.
Other Airlines Flying Direct To Tulum
While Delta will be the first U.S.-based airline to launch nonstop flights to Tulum in the spring of 2024, Mexico-based Aeromexico will launch new routes even sooner.
Beginning in December of this year, travelers will be able to fly nonstop from San Francisco and Chicago to Tulum. The start of these flights will coincide with the opening of Tulum International Airport, so travelers hoping to visit Tulum this winter are in luck.
If you want to escape the cold and enjoy the sunshine and beaches of Tulum, you can travel with Aeromexico (which is a Delta partner and part of the SkyTeam airline alliance.)
So far, Aeromexico and Delta are the only two airlines that have announced flights to Tulum, but it’s expected that more airlines will launch routes in the coming months.
Why Visit Tulum Anyway?
Tulum is one of the hottest destinations in Mexico, and it remains incredibly popular despite complaints of overtourism and crime.
In truth, Tulum is much safer than media reports claim, and despite the overdevelopment and overtourism, it’s a great destination for many travelers.
If you’re looking for trendy restaurants, buzzing nightlife, high-end resorts and hotels, amazing beaches, and cool things to do nearby, Tulum is an excellent choice.
It’s no longer the quiet fishing village it was in the early 2000s, and skyrocketing prices have sent budget-minded tourists elsewhere — but if you don’t mind paying higher prices and are looking for a luxurious beach break, Tulum is an ideal vacation spot.
You can enjoy white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water, as well as explore nearby Mayan ruins or take a dip in one of the many jungle cenotes (natural swimming pools) around Tulum.
The new Maya Train is expected to launch in early December at the same time as the Tulum International Airport, and this will allow visitors to Tulum to explore even more of the Riviera Maya.
