Countries all over the world are reopening for American tourists. Travel Off Path has extensively researched every country in the and we update this article daily on where Americans can travel right now!
With the United States being one of the hardest-hit nations in the world by the pandemic, many countries originally shut out United States travelers. Now with PCR testing, vaccinations, and more insight into the virus, many countries are welcoming back American tourists with open arms.
Some countries have even dropped all COVID-19 entry requirements for U.S. travelers.
Are Americans Allowed To Travel Right Now?
Yes. Americans have always been permitted to leave the country as they wish.
However, upon returning to the U.S., a negative test is still required, regardless of vaccination status.
All passengers into the USA will require proof of a negative covid test, performed no longer than 3-days before arrival. The test can be antigen or PCR. We have an entire USA testing for entry Q&A article here.Â
Starting in November 2021, proof of vaccination for entry into the USA is expected to launch.

Albania
Albania started allowing American tourists on July 1, 2020 and of 2021 they are still wide open for tourism.
Starting Sept 1, 2021, a 48-hour antigen test, 72 hour PCR test, proof of vaccination or proof of recovery is needed to enter.
Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda reopened to Americans on June 4, 2020.
US residents will have to bring a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 7 days before arrival.
Starting October 1, 2021, ONLY fully vaccinated Americans will be permitted to enter, and the PCR testing window shrinks from 7 days down to 4.
Armenia
Armenia reopened to American Tourists on August 12
As of mid-2021: Arrivals can either bring a negative 72-hour PCR with them to circumvent quarantine â OR â they can show proof of being fully vaccinated with at least 14 days having elapsed.
Aruba
Aruba is reopened American tourists on July 10
U.S. citizens will have to fill out an online health declaration form and upload a negative covid PCR test (taken at most 72 hours before departure, but at least 12 hours before departure). Exceptions to testing is available for fully vaccinated Americans who have the CommonPass Smart Health Card.
Some great direct flights from the US to Aruba include: from New York on United and JetBlue, from Atlanta on Delta, and from Miami on American.
Bahamas
Americans can travel to Bahamas right now with proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 5 days. The test must be uploaded to your online travel health visa before heading to the Bahamas.
For all stays over 4 nights (by an unvaccinated traveler), a 2nd rapid antigen test will be taken on the 5th day of your stay.
Starting October 1, 2021, fully vaccinated Americans can provide a rapid antigen test instead of PCR for entry.
Barbados
Barbados reopened for American tourists on July 12th, 2020.
Travelers from the United States will need to bring a negative-PCR test no older than 72 hours before departure. Vaccinated travelers will be tested with a rapid PCR on arrival, and in 1-2 days once test results are back, can fully enjoy Barbados. Unvaccinated passengers must quarantine for 5-days in government-approved accommodation, of which a negative PCR test will release them from quarantine.
Belarus
Belarus reopened for American tourists in 2020.
They are accepting over 75 nations with no quarantine, and as of mid-October, a 72-hour PCR test is now required.
Update: Recent info out of Belarus is now suggesting a 10-day quarantine may be required for all arrivals, and as of December 21, a PCR test as well.
Belize
Americans can travel to Belize for tourism as of October 1st, 2020.
U.S. travelers will need a COVID PCR test within 96 hours or an antigen test within 48 hours of travel for fast track at airport. Passengers who do not bring a negative test will be tested at the airport at the travelers own cost and could face quarantines while awaiting results.
New in September 2021: Vaccinated travelers were exempt from testing for most of 2021, but now must also provide a 96-hour PCR or 48-hour antigen test for entry.
Bermuda
Bermuda officially reopened for American tourists on July 1st.
To be able to head down for a vacation, Americans will need to bring a negative covid PCR test no older than 72 hours before boarding AND take another test upon arrival.
New in September 2021: Bermuda updated entry requirements making them very difficult to follow, even for fully vaccinated passengers. They include wearing of colored wrist bands, tests on arrival, day 4, 8, and 10, and many restrictions.
Bolivia
Bolivia is now allowing American tourists to visit.
Update May 2020: A 72 hour PCR test is needed, as well as a 10-day quarantine.

Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina just reopened for American tourists on September 12, 2020.
As of 2021, All passengers must bring a negative PCR or antigen test no older than 48 hours prior to departure, or be fully vaccinated.
Bulgaria
*Recently REMOVED
Bulgaria reopened to American tourists as of May 2021, but shortly after reinstated the entry ban effective Sept 1, 2021.
Canada
Fully vaccinated Americans are now permitted to enter Canada for tourism as of August 9, 2021. However, there are still a few hoops to jump through, even after showing proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior.
A pre-entry negative PCR test must be done within 72-hour prior to entering Canada, plus another test done upon arrival.
Chile
Chile is reopening for tourism in December and has stated that American tourists will be permitted to enter.
A 72-hour PCR test will be required, as well as a contact tracing app, and starting Jan 1, 2021 ALL passengers into Chile must complete a 10-day quarantine.
April 2021 Update: Chile has re-closed borders for general tourism until further notice.
Curaçao
Curaçao is now allowing tourists from the United States.
As of January 1, 2021 all travelers from the United States may visit.
All passengers will need proof of a 48-hour PCR test or a 24-hour antigen test.
Cyprus
On June 1, 2021, Cyprus reopened for American tourists.
Passengers from the U.S. will need to fill out an online form and bring a 72-hour PCR test in order to enter, as the States is currently on the âOrangeâ list.
Czech Republic
In June, the US was on the green list with no entry requirements, but as of late August, itâs now on the Dark Red list which has double testing or proof of vaccination. Throughout 2021 it will change status many times, so check below for current rules.
Denmark
(vaccinated only)
Starting June 5, 2021, fully vaccinated American tourists can enter Denmark for non-essential reasons. At least 14 days must have elapsed from the final dose. No tests or quarantines are required!
Dominica
Dominica reopened for Americans on August 7, 2020
US residents will have to bring a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours before boarding, fill out an online questionnaire, and agree to a rapid test upon arrival.
Ecuador
Ecuador has now reopened for American tourists
As of March 22, 2021, Americans can now travel to Ecuador WITHOUT quarantine, as long as they bring a negative PCR or antigen test, no older than 3 days.
Proof of vaccination or proof of recovery allows passengers to skip the testing rule.
Direct flights from Miami, Houston and New York have already resumed into Quito and Guayaquil
Egypt
Americans can travel to Egypt as of July 1, 2020. Americans traveling to Egypt must present a negative PCR test certificate for COVID-19, taken at a maximum of 96 hours before their flight departure time.

El Salvador
American tourists are welcome in El Salvador with either proof of a negative test or proof of vaccination. The test must not be older than 72 hours before arrival and must be NAAT, LAMP, or PCR.
Estonia
Estonia started allowing tourists from the U.S. on June 21, 2021.
In June, American tourists could enter with no tests and no quarantines, however the infection rate has grown in late 2021, which means American tourists need to self isolate with a test to release option. Only vaccinated Americans can enter at this time.
This is expected to change frequently.
Finland
Finland removed entry for unvaccinated Americans on September 1, 2021.
Fully vaccinated passengers from the U.S. can still enter, as long as 14 has passed since the last/final shot. No testing or quarantines are required for fully vaccinated passengers.
France
As of June 18, 2021, France has reopened for American tourists, both vaccinated and unvaccinated.
Vaccinated Americans will need to show their proof of being fully vaccinated and will not be subject to any tests. Unvaccinated tourists will need a compelling essential reason to enter, plus testing.

French Polynesia
French Polynesia (think Tahiti and Bora Bora) reopened a second time for American tourists July-2021.
Vaccinated Americans must bring a negative 72-hour PCR test or a 48-hour antigen test, along with their proof of vaccination. Unvaccinated passengers are only allowed for a compelling reason.
San Francisco and Los Angeles fly direct.
Georgia
The country of Georgia is now allowing American tourists as of Feb 1, 2021
US travelers have TWO options to enter Georgia:
1- If vaccinated, they can enter restriction-free
2- If unvaccinated, they will need to bring a negative 72-hour PCR test, isolate for 3 days, and take another test to release.
Germany

Ghana
Ghana has reopened for tourism and is allowing Americans to visit, as of September 1st, 2020.
All passengers must bring results of a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours prior to departure. The test must be taken in the country of origin. Another mandatory test will be performed at the airport upon arrival.
Direct flights to Ghana from New York on Delta resumed on Sept 13.
Greece
Greece reopened ahead of schedule for American tourists, allowing them entry as of April 19, 2021.
American travelers have 2 choices to enter Greece: They can present a negative PCR test taken no longer than 72 hours before arrival â or â they can present proof of being fully vaccinated instead.
*Starting Sept 27, 2021, passengers coming from the USA are also subject to a rapid test on arrival.
Grenada
On Aug 1, 2020 Grenada will started accepting American tourists.
As of 2021, only vaccinated passengers with a pre-flight 72-hour PCR test may enter. a 2-day quarantine is also in effect.
Flights restart from Miami and New York in late August.
Guatemala
Americans will need to bring a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours prior to the flight.
Antigen tests are also permitted if PCR is not possible. Proof of recovery is also valid.
As of Feb 2021, Guatemala is now allowing vaccinated tourists to enter restriction-free
Haiti
Haiti reopened for tourism on July 1, but it took us a while to get confirmation!
Starting on February 9, 2021 all passengers into Haiti will require proof of a negative PCR or antigen test, taken no longer than 72 hours prior to arrival. Proof of recovery is also being accepted.
Honduras
Americans can travel to Honduras as of August 2nd, 2020.Â
As of 2021, US tourists will need to bring proof of a negative covid test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival, but it can be either a PCR -or- a Rapid Test. Proof of vaccination will bypass testing.
Hungary
Passengers from the USA can once again travel to Hungary as of September 2021, providing they have one of the following:
- A 72-hour negative PCR test
- Proof of vaccination within 1 year
- Proof of recovery within 6 months, with prior positive test and certificate
Iceland
Iceland has reopened borders for vaccinated American tourists.
Any American traveler that can show proof of being fully inoculated will be permitted entry into Iceland. However, as of July 26, 2021, due to concerns with variants, a 72-hour negative test will also be required. Antigen or PCR.
Ireland
As of Mid-July 2021, Ireland is allowing American tourists to enter.
Rules differ depending on vaccination status. Vaccinated passengers from the US can enter without restrictions. Unvaccinated passengers have strict rules including a pre-flight 72-hour PCR test and a quarantine period.
Italy
After over 1 full year of being locked out of Italy, American tourists are finally welcomed back.
As of June 21, 2021, American tourists can now enter, with more strict entry rules added in September 2021
- Vaccinated travelers will also have to provide a negative test
- Unvaccinated travelers will have to provide a negative test, quarantine for 5 days, and re-test again
Jamaica
Jamaica is requiring all Americanâs visiting to first fill out an online Travel Authorization Card that includes a negative test for COVID-19.
Starting March 11, 2021, all passengers to Jamaica will need proof of a negative PCR or antigen test, taken no longer than 3 days before the flight.
Jordan
Jordan reopened its borders for international tourism on September 8, 2020.
General entry rules include bringing a 72-hour negative PCR test, and high-risk countries will be tested again upon arrival at the airport. Negative results will exempt the traveler from isolation.
Kenya
Kenya opened for American travelers as of August 1st, 2020. Passengers arriving in Kenya must bring a negative PCR test taken within 96 hours of flying or they will face a mandatory 14 day self-isolation.
Kosovo
Kosovo is open for tourism and allowing Americanâs to visit.Â
A 72-hour negative PCR test is now required. Fully vaccinated Americans can skip testing.
Pristina airport is reopen, as well as land borders between Montenegro and Albania. While the USA doesnât fly directly to Kosovo, Americans can transit in London or Istanbul.

Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan reopened for tourism in August, but as of December starting allowing American tourists to enter.Â
In 2021- A 72-hour PCR test or proof of vaccination is needed to enter.

Lebanon
Lebanon reopened in July 2020, allowing American tourists to return.Â
All passengers will need to bring a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 96 hours before arrival, and quarantine for 72 hours.
As of April 2021 vaccinated travelers are now exempt from quarantine and presenting a negative 96-hour PCR test to enter Lebanon. However, a second PCR test may be performed upon arrival at the airport.

Maldives
Americans can travel to the Maldives of of July 15th, 2020. Americans will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test that was taken no more than 96 hours prior to departure.
Starting April 20, 2021, fully vaccinated Americans can now skip the 96-hour PCR testing requirement. Instead of taking a test, inoculated travelers will bring their vaccination certificate showing they have received their last (or single shot for J&J) at least 14 days before entering the Maldives.

Malta
Starting June 17, 2021, Americans from 40 states are permitted to enter Malta for tourism.
As of July 2021, Malta is requiring all visitors from the U.S. be fully vaccinated, no exceptions. Until July 31, 2021 the paper CDC card will suffice as proof. After August 1, 2021, only digital proof via the Verifly App will be accepted.

Mexico
Americans can travel to Mexico and in fact, it was one of the only countries that never actually really closed its borders to Americans in the first place. No tests, no quarantines.
The country has been wide open for tourism since mid-2020, as of mid-2021, is one of the worldâs most popular âpandemic eraâ destinations.

Montenegro
Montenegro is allowing all countries to visit, including the USA.
A 48-hour PCR test is required, but exceptions are being made for those fully recovered from the virus, or for vaccinated passengers.Â
The country is located in Europe along the Adriatic coast and is quite affordable compared to its neighbors on the other side of the sea.
Morocco
Morocco has been open for US tourists since September 2020. Americans have two options to enter Morocco in 2021: Bring a 48- hour negative PCR test, or proof of being fully vaccinated.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is welcoming back American tourists as of June 24, 2021.
In September 2021, more restrictions were added, including: vaccinated travelers now also have to provide a negative test and quarantine for 10 days, with unvaccinated travelers being banned outright.
Nepal
Starting October 1, 2021, Nepal has dropped quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated passengers. a 72-hour PCR is still needed for entry.

Nicaragua
Americans can travel to Nicaragua as of September 1st, 2020.
Nicaragua never really closed their borders for tourism in the first place, but flights were suspended, effectively cutting the nation off to Americans.
Direct flights from Houston and Miami resumed Oct 1.
in 2021, a 72 negative PCR test is needed
North Macedonia
North Macedonia is now accepting American travelers as of July 1,2020
For 13 months, no tests or quarantines were required. However, starting August 2021 visitors will now be required to show proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or a negative test to enter.
Panama
American tourists can travel to Panama as of October 12, 2020. However, all U.S. passengers will have to bring a negative PCR or antigen test, taken no longer than 72 hours before arrival.
Vaccinated Americans can show certification that theyâve received both doses of the vaccine, they can enter Panama without showing proof of a negative PCR or antigen test.
Pakistan
Americans can travel to Pakistan as of October 5th, 2020.
All passengers will have to bring a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours before arrival, with another rapid test on arrival.
Paraguay
Paraguay has reopened for American tourists as of December 2020.
All passengers will need to bring a 72-hour negative Covid test, but thankfully Paraguay is accepting PCR, LAMP, and Nucleic Acid tests.
Peru
US residents can travel to Peru as of November 1, 2020.
All passengers will have to bring a negative PCR test, taken no longer than 72 hours before arrival. Proof of vaccination is also accepted.
Flights are authorized from these US cities: Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, OrlandoÂ
Poland
Tourists from the U.S. can enter Poland for non-essential travel and tourism as of June 21, 2021.
Vaccinated passengers will have no tests or quarantines, while unvaccinated passengers will need a 48-hour PCR or antigen test and another upon arrival or within 48 hours of arrival.

Portugal
American tourists are permitted to visit Portugal again for non-essential travel as of mid-June 2021.
All passengers will need a negative 72-hour PCR test in order to enter mainland Portugal. Rules can differ for the islands of Madeira and Azores.
Puerto Rico
Americans can travel to Puerto Rico as of July 15th, 2020. 72-hour negative-PCR tests are needed to gain access to the island, with exemptions for fully vaccinated passengers.
Romania
On June 1, 2021, Romania removed the travel ban on foreign arrivals, including the USA. Passengers from the States can once again enter Romania.
Vaccinated passengers can enter virtually restriction-free, while unvaccinated passengers will have to complete a 10-14 day quarantine.
Rwanda
Rwanda has officially reopened for tourism as of June 17, 2020 and is allowing American tourists to visit.
Americans will need to bring a negative-PCR test taken at most 72 hours before arrival and be ready to be tested again upon arrival.
There are currently no direct flights from the USA, but RwandAir is looking into creating a direct NYC to Kigali route.
Russia
As of July 2021, Russia has reopened for American travelers.
American tourists must come directly from the USA or from another approved country. A 72-hour negative PCR test is required for entry, as well as an online application form.
Proof of travel insurance is mandatory for entry into Russia.
Serbia
Serbia Has Reopened To Tourists From All Countries.
Where is Serbia? Itâs a landlocked European nation that borders Montenegro, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
New York flies direct on Air Serbia to Belgrade, Serbiaâs capital city daily.
2021 Note: ALL arrivals into Serbia will need to present a 48-hour PCR or antigen test.
Slovakia
As of July 19, Slovakia is now allowing American tourists to enter.
Entry is easiest for fully-vaccinated passengers, as they are considered low risk and have no tests/quarantines. Unvaccinated passengers may still enter, but they will need a 72-hour PCR test and a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.
Slovenia
As of mid-2021, American tourists can enter Slovenia for non-essential reasons, but only if they are fully vaccinated or recently recovered. 14 days must have passed since the final dose of the vaccine. If using recovery, a positive PCR test is needed at least 10-days old, but not older than 6 months.
South Africa
Americans can travel to South Africa as of November 12, 2020
All arrivals will need to bring proof of a negative PCR test, administered no more than 72-hours before departure.
Spain
American tourists can enter Spain as of June 7, 2021, providing they are fully vaccinated and at least 14 days have passed since the final treatment. No tests or quarantines are needed, just proof of vaccination.
As of September 2021, entry by non-vaccinated US travelers is no longer permitted.
St. Barths
St.Barths officially reopened its borders for American tourists on June 22, 2020. Saint Barthelemy, or St. Barths as itâs commonly called, is a beautiful French-speaking Caribbean island known for its white-sand beaches, luxurious hotels, duty-free shopping and stunning views.
Vaccinated American tourists will have to bring their proof of vaccination and either a 48-hour antigen test or a 72 hour PCR test. Unvaccinated American tourists will have to provide a negative 72-hour PCR test, plus quarantine for the first 7 days of arrival, with a 2nd PCR test on Day 7.
St Lucia
The beautiful island nation of Saint Lucia opened to U.S. travellers on June 4th, 2020.
Americans are required to fill out an online form, bring a negative covid test, taken no longer than 5 days before departure in order to board their flight to Saint Lucia.
Direct Flights: from Atlanta on Delta, from Miami on American, and from New York on United and JetBlue.
St. Vincent and The Grenadines
St. Vincent and the Grenadines officially reopened for U.S. tourists on July 1, 2020.
Entry requirements in 2021 include: proof of vaccination, bringing a 72-hour negative PCR test, and being tested again upon arrival. Only approved accommodations can be booked.
Direct flights from New York on Caribbean Air start on July 15 and flights from Miami on American Airlines start July 11.
Sweden
*Recently REMOVED
As of September 6, 2021, entry into Sweden from the USA was revoked.
Switzerland
As of July 2021, American tourists can once again travel to Switzerland.
As of September 13, 2021, only proof of being fully vaccinated is accepted. A negative test or proof of recent recovery is no longer allowed for entry.
Tanzania
Americans can travel to Tanzania as of June 1st, 2020.
Fancy a safari? Or how about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro? Maybe just laying on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar? The African nation of Tanzania will allow tourists to come and do all of the above.
A negative 96-hour PCR test is required from all passengers, plus another rapid test upon arrival.
Tunisia
As of 2021, American tourists can enter Tunisia.
All passengers, even if fully vaccinated, will need a 72-hour PCR test to enter. Unvaccinated travelers will also have to perform a 10-day quarantine upon arrival.
Turkey
As of June 12th, 2020. Americans can travel to Turkey.Â
Under normal âpre-covidâ travel rules, Americans need to obtain an e-visa before traveling to Turkey. The visa centres are back up and running to process these.
Direct flights have resumed from 7 American cities already!
Americans can bring a negative 72-hour PCR test, proof of recent recovery, or proof of being fully vaccinated to enter.
Turks and Caicos
Turks & Caicos opened for Americans on July 22.
US travelers can head down to the Turks and Caicos late July, but only by flying in, as the cruise ports are staying closed until at least September.
A 72-hour negative-PCR test is required before arrival, even for fully vaccinated passengers.
Many cities fly directly into Turks and Caicos, including: New York, Charlotte, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago.
UAE (Dubai)
Americans can travel to Dubai officially as of July 7, 2020.
Americanâs need to: register their âhealth declarationâ on an app before their trip, bring a negative PCR test within 96 hours of boarding, and have health insurance to be able to enter.
Emirates is flying directly to Dubai from Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington starting in July.

Uganda
On October 1, 2020, Uganda officially reopened both air and land borders to U.S. tourists.
All passengers will need a 72 hour negative PCR test to enter, and another PCR test in order to leave the country.
UK
Finally- the United Kingdom has made this list for American travelers.
For the first half of 2021, the UK had banned leisure travel. Now, as of May 17 with the re-launch of their âtest to releaseâ program and resumption of foreign travel, American arrivals can once again travel to the UK.
As of August 2, 2021, American tourists will no longer be required to self-isolate for 10 days. A pre-flight PCR test, plus a test on arrival (or at least within 2 days of arriving) will still need to be performed.
Ukraine
Americans can travel to Ukraine
As of 2021: All foreign passengers must provide proof of a negative PCR test that was performed no longer than 72 hours before arrival in Ukraine. Testing can be skipped for fully vaccinated passengers.
US Virgin Islands
On June 1, 2020 the US Virgin Islands (think St. Croix and St. Thomas) have reopened for tourism. Americanâs donât even need a passport to go!
After a brief shutdown the U.S. Virgin Islands are open again for American travelers.
U.S. citizens can fly to the USVIâs directly from Atlanta, Miami, New York, Houston, Charlotte or Fort Lauderdale.
In 2021, a 5-day negative PCR test is required for entry.
Zambia
Zambia has now reopened for tourism.
Americans need to bring a negative PCR test taken within 72-hours of departure, and they do not have to quarantine upon arrival.
There are no direct flights to Zambia from the USA, but travelers can easily transit through Istanbul.
